    It rotates with lots of tension in one direction but it does not spring back. It rotates back with no tension at all.

    I'm going to guess that it has nothing to do with Ferrari automobiles.... but I could be wrong. I'm not much of a vintage person.

    It seems to me (again, no real deep expertise in vintage stuff) that items from the 50-60's would generally have the wording in Italian (DX, SX, ricambi, capote, etc) and almost assuredly not use the term "Patent Pending", which is generally seen on American designs. Finally, with the word "ferrari" in a non trademark font, it seems like this might simply be from a different company called "ferrari" (it is not an uncommon name in Italy) and happen to look automotive.

    Again, just my guess. It could also be a long-lost part to a 166 !

    Looks like a lid stay for a piece of luggage or trunk. Probably a company with the same name but not affiliated. How big is it?

    that's a good guess, we had an old steamer trunk (oshkosh) with a mechanic lid stay similar, but it was brass and quite small in comparison.... the Ferrari fond does seem different then for auto parts use?

    Google is our friend once again. I googled "ferrari lid stay" and the exact item pictured showed up in my search. Primarily seems to find use in holding up cabinet doors, lids, etc.

    The flower petal motif surrounding the rivet connecting the two arms also plays into the manufacturers logo by dotting the "i" in ferrari.

    Furniture hinge for a kitchen cabinet. Italians love the cabinet doors that open upwards, so hinges can be adjusted to move smoothly but still to hold the door up.
