I'm not a wine drinker. I've tried lots of different types of wine, at the request of my wife, and mostly find them too bitter for my tastes.

So, the other day, we tried something new that I actually liked: It was a glass of Carlo Rossi Sangria. I could actually drink this stuff.

Yes, it's cheap. And it comes in a 1.5 liter jug, which I understand is pretty white trashy. Which I'm OK with, but it seems like a 1.5 l jug is a bit much for when we just want an occasional glass (i.e. most of it will go bad before we drink it).

Are there other types of wines that are similar tasting? I'd like to find something that tastes similar, but in smaller bottles (.7-1liter).

    Thanks!

Fixed that for ya. So... you like them on the sweet side. ;)

If your goal is to work your way up being a wine drinker, try a Riesling then a Gewurztraminer then maybe a Pinot. (blanc nor Noir) I'd make my final target a Merlot if that's your aim...

If you just like them sweet, look for the words 'Late Harvest" or Ice wine. -- The later the grape stays on the vine the more sugar, Ice wine they leave it till the first frost. Maybe work your way to a Marsala which still pretty sweet.

Buy inexpensive bottle with "Cotes du Rhone" on label. Enjoy.

Sorry, I don't have a clue what the Rossi Sangria tastes like but, for beginners who find mature wines to be too bitter, I often recommend that they start out with a beaujolais-villages. These wines are young, fruity, and very, very light. They are also inexpensive. Expect to pay around $12 for a bottle.

    Dom,
A bottle that is sweet, that I guarantee you will like is Moscato d'Asti. It is a sweet white wine with a touch of carbonation. Hi-Time carries it. It's just outside of the Champagne room.

I also find that some Zinfandels can be very fruity and sweet. I quite like them on occasion.

Wine connoisseurs hate it, wine growers admire it, because it is the wine that opened the market to the masses White Zinfandel.

Thanks for the tips. Yes, I do like them sweet. My drink of choice is coke, and if I must have alcohol, I prefer a rum and coke. However, if I drink it at night, I won't sleep. My wife and I are trying to find something that we can drink in the evenings together when we are at home watching a video or something.

I was in the grocery store today, and found a wine called Madria Sangria (http://www.madriasangria.com/). I'll try it tonight- We'll be watching The Girl who kicked the hornets nest (third in a 3 part series- the first two were great movies).

I'll be interested to try some of the others you guys suggested. From the looks of it, it looks like the sweeter wines will be whites, and not reds, correct? I've tried mostly reds, but maybe I need to switch to white wines.

Or maybe just find some caffeine-free coke, and stick with the rum and cokes...

If you can find a decent Lambrusco, it's usually a pretty light, sometimes slightly bubbly red wine. Probably the only ones you'll find in the grocery store though will be something like Cella or Riunite which isn't really the same. The real deal from Italy may be hard to find locally but might just suit your pallet well.
