i spoke with the owner a week ago, he was in from out of state to clear out his mothers estate and pick up the car

we start chatting about various cars and he mentioned he had a series 3espada. it just dawned on my that i have this spare espada AC compressor sitting in my storage and i asked if he was interested. so we were going to do some parts swapping with some of his other parts but now it looks like he wont be needing the compressor any longer.

    sadden for his loss

I don't know who can blame him for poor maintenance as even with a Lambo very well serviced it may happen too... knowing a guy with his Miura... **** happens too in his garage !

The best policy it to have a big fire extinguisher in any garage with an old carbed car in it! And to have a small one in the car too. If he had a big one handy, he could have saved the car and his house. Old carbs leak, old fuel lines leak, and so on. Fire extinguishers = Cheap insurance for every collector's garage.

Amen, Olivier. Last fall, just after a big$ engine freshening, my S1 Espada started squirting fuel from two loose fuel hose clamps. Fortunately I had to get out of the car to close the barn and smelled the fuel. I had also forgotten to put the fire extinguisher in the car, so I could easilly have lost the old girl.

It all adds up to poor maintenance guys. I know it can happen to anyone but with all those fuel connections utilizing paper washers and hose clamps the stuff needs to be watched like a hawk.

+ 1 million on always having a fire extinguisher handy.

This reminds me of a story about what frightened me away from Miura ownership back in the mid 1980s. I had my Alfa in a shop and they had a freshly restored red Miura in there with everything opened up. So looking at it I saw these tanks with lines & nozzles running everywhere. So I asked what was all this equipment? I guess the car had caught on fire once and they decided it was a damned good idea to have a fire system in the front and rear of course.

Daryl has a gorgeous black one that got an amazing restoration a while back. It's a real nice car.

You might see if Daryl can help you out. Ask him what it's like to have the slats ...
    They look really cool though.

If you're going to make a set it might be interesting to find out if a single pattern would fit all cars or if they all require hand fitting.

Please share what you find out.

    Espada dudes
i know you all love a good redo so here is a little bit with more to follow in two weeks or less. the levers are remfgd as are the fan ,ac knob and base plate as originals are unobtainium. the little pics on top of knobs are original to my car and appear never to have beem black on silver they are in fact gold on silver as was the original base plates i had .these items proved to be the hardest to obtain and or fabricate . thanks to all who helped!! this is the correct interior color for 8394 as is the black stitching according to Valentino.

    Guys,

Here's my take on the louver subject. I looked a long time to find an early SI with the tail louver. Having lived with it, I now know why Lamborghini stopped building the louver and why the louver units have disappeared from cars over the years. The louver assembly is a rather intricate piece that represents much hand labor. Due to the subtle curvature of the rear window the louver is made up of 7 (yes, seven) distinctly different "blade" profiles. Each blade is fastened to the frame with two very small pop rivets. The unit is then fastened to the rear sheetmetal with several tiny sheet metal screws. I suspect that the cost of making and installing the thing made it one of the first bits to be phased out as Espada production moved forward. From an owner's standpoint, the louver unit can be a royal pain when it comes time to clean the tail window glass. Dealing with the small fitment screws is a hassle, so some owners just took the grill unit off and hung it in the garage. Over time, louver units were broken or lost as a result.

If you want the louver look, I would suggest, rather than duplicating the original, designing a more robust replica unit with some kind of "quick change" attachment mechanism. Those of you who want to "louverize" your SI should send me a PM. I have done a CAD drawing of my grill and will make it available. I only ask that you give me a photo and chassis number of your car so that we can keep track of what cars are being retrofitted. The production history and details of these old cars is confusing enough as it is.

    Thanks Daryl,

Better they should hear it from you directly.

So maybe a velcro attachment technique? :)

Did you ever see the picture on VLG I posted in the Espadadog folder?
Someone glued on rubber vertical gill bars and then a big louvered cover over the rear window. There were lots of other "improvements" on that car as well.

Documenting this thing would be great though.

Imagine (dig really, really dep for this) a day when Espadas are north of 200K and this accessory becomes uber important?

    Hey, it could happen ...
