I am planning on taking my family to Hilton Head and Savannah in the next few weeks for vacation. We've been to Hilton Head before, we love it. Since Savannah is so close, and we haven't been there, we want to spend a few days.

What are some nice places / hotels to stay at? Any recommendations of things to do while there?

My wife and kids are big Paula Deen fans, I hear her restaurant is hard to get into, but seeing that we're foodies, it's one of the hopeful stops!

    Bohemian is probably the best.

Just give Stephane a moment to chime in. He is Savannah royalty as far as I'm concerned!

I live there. Avoid Paula Deen's; trust me. It is extremely overrated and overpriced. Give 5 Guys Burgers a try and The Mellow Mushroom. Vinny Van Go-Go's is the spot for pizza. Hope you enjoy your vacation. :)

Edit: Don't know much about hotels here; sorry.

We settled on the Hyatt. Appreciate the advice gents - I am a big BBQ fan, I know there's a place in town that's supposed to be good, may try it.

I really liked the mansion on forsyth park. kind of an upscale hip artsy kind of place with a really good restaurant; every room is different; etc. they used to have culinary classes there with the chef.

disclaimer: it's been about 4+ years since I've been there.

Hyatt is a great choice, right next to the Bohemian which would have been my #1 pick, but you will be just fine in the middle of all the action. You won't need your car there, about 50 restaurants within 300 yards from the hotel. If you really are a Paula Deen fan then you have to try it at least once in your lifetime, it's not too bad if you like southern comfort food. For Pizza, Vinny van Gogo's in Market Square is the place to go to.
    Enjoy your stay!

Mitch, thanks for that title! ;)

I live here in Savannah. Be off the streets downtown by 11:00 pm or so and you will be fine staying in the "tourist" areas. Lots of fun stuff to do, try a Ghost tour if you like that sort of thing. 1733 was a long time ago. :)

Vinny van Gogo's is cash only, Mellow Mushroom is another good pizza place as mentioned above.

    May Savannah fav's are :

Pink House - good food, and supposed to be haunted
Chart House - steak and fish place

Spanky's if you want bar food... my wife likes that - I think it reminds her of her teenage years!

I have only been through downtown Savannah once since I got down here and it seems like a pretty cool place. I live about thirty to forty minutes away from there. Send a PM if you need anything. I am sure some of the other guys who have been here a while are ok with that as well.

Are you coming back for the FCA meet?

Seconded on the Mansion at Forsyth Park. Smack in the middle of the historic district, surrounded by weeping willows - gotta love it!

Here are some pics I took last time we were there:
