There was also a smart looking white and blue 599 GTO which my son enjoyed an exciting few laps in as passenger!

    Looks like 500/625 s/n 0208/0540. The black 275 GTB/4 is s/n 10545.

the car at Silverstone and the car at Fantasyjunction are different chassis.
I have seen the "Silverstone car" at Goodwood FOS 2008.
See my pic of the chassisnumber:

the owner told me that when Ferrari had finished with the car it was sold to Australia with a just under 3 lite engine similar to a 750 Monza, which it still has today. After Australia the car was owned by Gonzalez as his personal car.

The driver with the brown "skid lid" is journalist/racer Tony Dron and with photography lights closeby, it looks as though #0482 could be the subject of a forthcoming Octane magazine article?

I am not sure in which issue of Octane it was published, but the story can be found here: Octane | Driven: Ferrari 625A

It seems that Ferrari upgraded all their works monopostos from 500 F2 to 625 F1 and renumbered the chassis. Very Italian, to renumber 500 F2 chassis #3 into 625 F1 chassis #2 ;)

After reading the article in Octane, I was wondering why the chassis were renumbered in the first place when going from 500 F2 to 625 F1 configuration, as this is basically the same chassis only with a different engine?

Most frequently there were two very simple reasons for Italian chassis restamping.

1 - Renumbered to sell the car as a new car. Generally after the minimum of razzing it up to look kind of new.

2 - If you have already paid import duties on chassis number x, you want every car you import to to be issued with that number so that it matches the paperwork, prevalent in South America during the 1950's when they had ultra steep import duties on expensive items such as racing cars.

Could be wrong but those are likely explanations

Maserati used to be the king of this game. At least one 250F had five different chassis numbers during its life.

In general this is correct. Of course, when they sold the 625 F1 chassis to customers like Whitehead later on it made perfect sense to renumber them.

But in this case it was the scuderia itself who was the previous and new owner of these cars, so no need there to fool a customer of customs. I even suppose that it was easier for them (e.g. for carnet reasons) to leave the old numbering system intact. In this specific case chassis #3 became chassis #2 causing a new carnet....

Duties paid on chassis #2 for some country where they were going to race maybe ?
