It's hard to say. The time between the introduction of the new car and the new Supercar is so close. There will have to be decided differences. That might lead credence to the front vs mid argument. Though that would be a stupid way to decide on product development. I can envision a new car that would be like looking at a great big beautiful 458. Kind of like a Boxer next to a Dino. Then the Enzo replacement could be a shocker. Could the new super car be driven by four wheels? That would be sufficiently shocking in and of itself. I've learned never to say never. My guess is the front engine for the next car.
If the Enzo replacement finally delivers the millichilli, perhaps engine will be smaller displacement, plus KERS? Would leave mid-V12 for flagship.
Sounds very interesting, especially the bolded part. Thanks for the info! As to seating arrangements -- I'm calling it now, it will be a cockpit design like a F-22 Raptor. As in the fighter jet, the passenger sits behind the driver.
Thanks for the great info! The Ferrari supercar has gotten closer and closer to an F1 car with each iteration. The F40 was a box, the F50 sculpted away more, and the enzo sculpted away even more. With your description of the stats and seating arrangement, I can see the enzo successor coming somewhere between the enzo and a caparo F1.
I think they will be side to side. One in front of the other is too much of a departure from the evolution of F40>F50>Enzo. I see it being a 2 seat f1 cockpit like the caparo but with the seats side by side instead of staggered. Image Unavailable, Please Login
I think it will be mid-engined. the real question is: mid-front, like the current 599 series or mid-rear. they can achieve perfect balance nowadays either way and with the front being a much more practical place, i think they retain the mid-front for the 599 replacement.
Would the 599 replacement be based on the same platform as the current FF? Minus AWD of course and the weight reduction of some exclusive (expensive) lightweight components? All the car companies are trying to cut costs; such as VW group building 3 different sports cars from the same platform for example. CH
That sir is correct, with a shorter wheelbase a few other items that will be exclusive to the replacement, whatever they decide to call it.
Rendering of 599 replacement. Hopefully not a repost, but this was in current C & R issue. Image Unavailable, Please Login
I always thought that the 599 was a front-mid-engine car. The engine is behind the front wheels, isn't it? I don't own one, but my Barchetta has the engine set way back and I think the 599 is even more rearward. I have driven several and just took this for granted. I know you mean rear-mid-engine, but I did want to ask this.
potentially plausible. seems like the 458 style lamps could be going company wide. for color/contrast here are spy shots of the 612 replacement....note the lamp shape http://www.indiancarsbikes.in/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/Ferrari-612-replacement-front-view-image.jpg http://www.autoguide.com/auto-news/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/Ferrari-612-400x267.jpg edit: Im just a design nerd, NOT an owner.
Affirmative on front mid-engined. The wheelbase on the 599 was stretched from the 575's 2500 mm to 2750 mm (or shrunk from the 612's 2950 mm, depending on how you want to see it). This helped on weight distribution and, as a side effect, improved ride. Taz Terry Phillips
1000kg is unlikely unless the next Enzo will be a kart like Caparo T1 or Atom. Looking at MP4-12C, which weighs 1300kg dry despite focusing on weight, using CF and being very compact with a rather small engine it will be very hard to shave off 300kg despite the added budget since the car will probably come close to 1 mil. euros. I think it is very difficult with current safety/emissions regulations to build 1000kg supercar. Just look at Pagani Huayra. It has CF and other space-age materials everywhere, and still weighs close to 1500kg with fluids. I am expecting 1200kg car with 900hp V8 Turbo. Actually there were this kind of rumours.
Wouldn't it be possible that the 599 Successor might be getting a Hybrid Drive under its skin, similar to that of Porsche's 918 Spyder? 700 BHP are makable, 600 BHP from the petrol engine and 100 BHP from its electrical counterpart, or 550 BHP vs. 150 BHP . . . Mix it up Ferrari call their Hybrid Concept Car 599 Hy-Kers: http://www.ferrari.com/English/GT_Sport%20Cars/599-HY-KERS/Pages/100302_CAR_geneva_2010_HY-KERS.aspx Ferrari's 599 Hy-Kers produces approx. 700 BHP!!! Alarma . . . Alarma . . . To some Hardcore-100%-Combustion-Engine-Car-Lovers (Including My Humbleness) a Hybrid Drive in a Ferrari or a Porsche Supercar might seem tragic, but in our modern times it is inevitable that every Supercar Manufacturer must at least offer one Green-Monster for political correctness . . . Hmmm! This is evolution, we can not stop it, we have to look forward to it Greetz, Joseph
Yes, 599 is mid-front engine. In fact, much more "mid" than even the TR, 512TR/M, as their engines were so far back that they were actually over the rear axle instead of in front of it. However, mid-V12 desirability, for me anyway, means the engine is behind the cockpit, not in front. Can only pray, I suppose.
The 599 replacement to be 1200k and have a 900 hp V8 Turbo--are you smoking crack? No way, no chance, period.
I think you'd have to step up to the "next Enzo" for race-style/engine behind the cockpit. The new 599 would still have to be able to tote golf clubs, etc.
Sorry gents, we had gotten off-topic and we actually were talking about the next Enzo replacement, too. No need for the crack pipes, yet.
You think? I was hoping that the Cali and FF would now provide that usability and the flagship could get back to a slightly less everyday car. Overnight bags only!
Definitely could be construed that way. However, to me, the flagship is still a regular series production car, but the "top of the line" so to speak. The Enzo would be the "halo" car.
A fine distinction. As long as there's an Enzo the 599 will be primarily a GT suitable for weekend, if not daily, use.
