There's a gorgeous blue spider on e-bay with this claim, bought in US, cannot get it registered in Canada, what's the deal?

    check www.riv.ca .

That will confirm if it can come to Canada. But what I know off the top of my head is you need the Canadian style bumpers on it, which are about 13K. Then the recall letter.

If the car is over 15 years old there are none of these restrictions. But check the RIV website before you do anything.

Or it could be because the car originally came from outside the US, then became a US car. Here is an excerpt from the RIV website:

    "Grey market vehicles

Grey market vehicles are foreign-specification vehicles that are re-certified by a U.S. company. These are vehicles that were originally manufactured for a domestic market other than the United States. They were subsequently imported into the U.S. where they have been modified to comply with U.S. safety and emissions standards.

Grey market vehicles may have a label affixed by the U.S. company that altered the vehicle indicating that the vehicle has been “imported”, “altered”, or “modified” to comply with U.S. standards. Grey market vehicles (excluding buses) less than 15 years old from the date of manufacture and buses (including school buses) manufactured on or after January 1, 1971 are inadmissible for entry into Canada."

As soon as the (any) car is 15 years old. It can enter Canada easily, pay the taxes and away you go. If the car is newer than 15 years it needs to meet RIV requirements. In this case, as Rorie mentioned, bumpers. If you want a 355 in Canada. Either buy one that is already here, and pay a big premium :) Or buy a car that is 15 years old....based on actual build date.

Tons more info in the Canada section.

Not bumpers. ;) Up until 2 years ago, then yes, US-spec vehicles imported to Canada had to be modified to comply with the tougher Canadian bumper regulations, usually by installing the Canadian bumpers or extra components on to the US-spec car (which Ferrari would never sell you).

Just over 2 years ago, however, Canada modified the import requirements so that vehicles less than 15 years old could be imported without meeting Canadian bumper requirements IF the vehicle met US bumper requirements. I brought in a US spec 1995 car in May 2009 (only 14 yrs old at the time) that would have previously required bumper mods, but did not require them any more.

What IS required by RIV - basically, operational DRLs, french airbag warning stickers, and a speedometer that shows km/h on the scale. Also required is a letter from manufacturer certifying that the particular US spec vehicle has no outstanding recalls. This letter is either very hard to get or very expensive to get from Ferrari.

Exceptions to bumper compliance waiver - you still can't bring in a US spec Lotus Elise to Canada, even though the same spec cars have been sold in Canada since 2005 or 6. The reason is that the US Elise does not meet the US bumper requirements, Lotus has a special waiver to allow them to be legally imported to and registered in the US. However, since they don't actually meet the US regs, they aren't allowed to come into Canada... despite Lotus having a similar waiver in Canada for the Canadian spec cars!

I brought up my 1999 355 F1 into Canada a year ago without any problems at all ! There is no longer any requirement to modify the bumpers.....don't let anyone tell you that there is !

All you have to do is modify your fog lights to become Daytime Running Lights and get the recall clearance letter.( this part can be tricky)

I'd be happy to help any Canadian wishing to bring a Ferrari into Canada by explaining the process....
