Can anyone recommend what brand and type of oil I should be using on my 1985 308GTSi QV? I've heard that synthetic oils could damage critical seals and such. And also, what brand/type of gear oil is prefered? I live in Vancouver Canada if that helps in your recommendations. Thanks to everyone who will reply. It is much appreciated. Go Canucks!

    Synthetic oil doesn't damage seals.

I use Valvoline Racing 20w/50 in the car. I too have heard not to use synthetics in that engine. Nothing wrong with good ole Dino oil.

Thanks for the input everyone. I'm still trying to figure out where I can purchase these oil brands locally that everyone so far has mentioned.

You'll probably find in your owner's manual that the recommended oil is AGIP Sint 2000, which is a synthetic oil.

That is what is in Prugna. After ready some long threads here on F-Chat that is what I with went originally and have stayed with. Also use Water Wetter.

Last time I bought I used a supplier that advertised in the FCA newsletter.

I've been running Mobil 1 20W50 V-Twin which is a high zinc/phosphorous motorcycle oil. This is a hot topic, because many new oils have less and less of those additives, which could cause valvetrain damage. I'm sure this is most critical with a brand new engine where the parts need to wear together, but on a well-used motor?... I suppose it can't hurt.

Although I've found that the 20 weight makes for a sluggish cold starting idle. Never had issues like that when I ran Castrol Syntec 5W50. But since the Syntec is now an "SM" rated oil (may even be "SN" now), I wouldn't use it because of the lower ZDDP levels.

I'll be running Motul 5100 10W50 semi-synthetic motorcycle oil for this upcoming oil change. This is as close to the original Agip SINT 10W50 spec as I can determine. I really would have liked to use Silkolene Pro 4 Plus full-synthetic 10W50, but unfortunately, it isn't available in Canada (unless I bring it across from Washington state, or have it shipped by mail...).

When I had my 85 308QV, I used Royal Purple and Redline Gear Oil. My mechanic who happened to be the NA rep for Ferrari uses this stuff. He is on here under FerrariDR. He would be a good one to answer this. Good Luck

I add a can of BG MOA for the zinc and i swear a thinner oil makes a difference I can feel.

Use the oil that is recommended in the owners manual. Agonizing over "the best oil" is a total waste of time.

I'm using Esso Ultra 10w40 for road use and everything is fine. I prefer to have a "fast" oil in warm up -10 instead of 20-, and a 40 grade at high temp. I don't need the 50 grade -I'm using the car gently, not on track-.
