Hmmmm...I wonder if that story originate with this user:

The article reads a LOT like this thread (and even references it). Still, interesting and informative. My regret is never having gotten to see such a magnificent car that was so near to where I live.

Ya think? The article was written by Jason Nark - aka: narkj

I only question the $375,000 that he claims the "doctor" paid for the F50. That can not be accurate as RufMD would have been suspicious from the beginning with such a low price.

??? He said it was $575k earlier in the thread. With extra work, it was $600k+.

It was in a magazine last year. I will have to dig it up, but a lot of what RufMD has explained was there - RufMDs is better than the magazine of course since he has all the cool little details.

These things take on lives of their own. It's amazing how much is written as if they KNOW the real story, and those real stories often conflict with each other.

You are right though, that is an ok summation of events.

I was thinking about this again tonight.I knew I had some pictures of it somewhere. I remember the first time I saw the car "hidden" in plain sight with the personalized tag at the time. This was in 2006 at the Keeneland Concours De Elegance. The picture with the little girl was taken at my house when the, thief, let me have it as a loaner for a week about a year or so after Keeneland.
He called me one day and asked if I would like to take the F50 for a week while he was out of town.Of course I said hell yes! He dropped it off at my office and when I got there ,there it was, a gleaming red F50.He told me to only put Shell gasoline in it and he had already filled it up for me.I got in it and drove it home that afternoon with a grin from ear to ear.Surprisingly very easy car to drive, similar to a Honda or something considering this was the Ultimate supercar it is.I get into my little town and immediately notice an unmarked car makes a U-turn and follows me.I figure he knows I am going to speed, right? Soon another marked car is behind me and moving up.The marked unit finally turns his lights on and I pull into a parking lot.The other car and then another pull in too.The cop asks me to get out of the car and for the paperwork and my license.I comply and ask what the problem is.He tells me this car drove away from a gas station without paying!! They will arrest you for that as you know.I tell him he was mistaken and possibly he saw a ricer with a big wing that drove off.He insists that it was this car because he could see the engine in the rear window on the video.I continue to disagree and then he says "I know what I saw at that Shell station!" It was at that point the bell went off in my head.So I told him I would call the owner and ask him about it.When I called "the owner" and told him I had been pulled over and was talking to a cop that wanted to talk to him about something,he was stunned and stuttering.Speechless, silence, then in a breaking voice wanted to know what for.I told him a drive off without paying and then in a sigh of relief says"oh I was on the phone not paying attention and just forgot to pay for the gas." He insisted he would run down to that store and pay(he hadnt left town yet). The cops detained me there next to the Ferrari for a little while until they had confirmation he had in fact payed for it.Then they said have a good day and I was free to go.Looking back, no wonder he was so nervous when I told him what happened!! He was probably about to s**t bricks! Totally unbelievable. Everyone had a good laugh afterwards, but what if they had just done some checking? Looking back I wonder if he was that stupid or if he was really trying to get away with a free fill up? He later told me the lady at the store was fine and she "..knew something was wrong when it happened because she knew a $60,000 car when she saw one and nobody would just drive off with that kind of money." I guess it wasnt enough to steal one of the most expensive cars in the world in a brazen daylight heist! This would have to be one of the top ten best known Ferraris of all time? Shame that guy wrecked it.Truely amazing unbelievable story.

Such a great story; especially in hindsight. Great photos too :) Few cars gleam in the sunlight of the early morning as that F50 did. I'm sure I've said it before... but of the F50's I've seen, this was the nicest.

Echoning what Isaac just said, that's an AMAZING story, especially in hindsight!

I'm just going to add that if any other F50 owner's have that itch to loan their car out for a week (with or without a full tank of gas) I would be thrilled to have the honor of taking care of it for you. I promise to bring it back in the same condition it's provided, just with a few more miles on the odometer which isn't really a bad thing. ;)

Driving an F50 is on my bucket list.

The story of this car and the mishandling by the Feds was mentioned on Judge Napolatono's tv show (freedom Watch i think) on Fox last week.

classless ****s. How does our government and state manage to hire the biggest scum of the earth on such a consistent basis. Whether it be police officers, federal agents or even a worthless president. Amazing.
