Ok, so I am a rookie Ferrari owner and sorry if this is a silly question, but with the top off, my 328 whistles when I hit 90 mph and above. I mean, its a really loud wind whistle, to the point where, I slow down because its sooooo loud. Anyone had this issue? Could it be the mirror? windshield leak?

    Just fishing....and all thoughts appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Trey

I'd try the car under same circumstances with top in place but windows down, then with windows up. Maybe isolate by one window down at a time. If it's exterior at all, trim, mirror, etc it will occur with the top in place. Also try with top off and windows up.

    This is quite coincidental..Today
I went for a drive on the freeway in my GTS.The roof was off,it was approx 17 degC outside so I had the heater on only on the drivers side.I had the vent position switch set to open for the footwell vent.Anyway for the first hour of the trip I could hear this annoying whistle coming from the drivers side rear.Winding the windows down didnt change the noise. It ended up being that the drivers side footwell vent was closed as were the dash vents and the noise was air trying to escape through a closed vent.I opened the vent and the sound went away.

Thanks for the suggestions. I drove it today, top on, top off, windows up, windows down, and even holding my hand around the side mirror. No luck. It still whistles like a tea pot over 85 mph. At 100, its painful. I'm pretty sure its coming from some point past the seats. I also think its exterior of the cabin. Several people have suggested that it could be the tailpipes, but the rpm's do not matter....it's speed. that is why I think its wind....side louvers? top spoiler?

    Dang this is frustrating!

    Thanks to all.

Maybe it's the big grin you have when driving, all that air is passing through the gap in your teeth :)

I had the same issue with my Jag. No matter what I did, I could not locate the source of the whistle. Drove me nuts for years. Then a rock cracked the windshield. With the new windshield, the whistle is gone. FWIW.

This is a great point. Look very, very close at the upper seal and around the windshield. If its torn, curled or deformed in any way, thats your noise.

A .200 tall edge in the way of high speed air will create turbulence, and that will create the sound as an effect of the turbulence.

The windshield does not have to leak, it still may be water tight, but any high, sharp edge in the airstream can cause this effect. Mach .925 teaches you stuff. :)

A good point. Replaced that seal soon after I got my car, and have had it at speeds of over 120 with the top off and no nosie like you describe. Also there are rubber pads that the rear quarter louvers press against when closed to keep them from moving about, if they are missing, the louver could be moving enough to make the noise.
