    Hey fella's,
A week ago, I was on my way home from a 20 mile drive, and my CEL 5-8 came on while cruising steady on the freeway, then after a mile or so, it went off. The car was running fine the rest of the way home, then I checked the cat temps, and they were both normal.
Checking cat temps is something I do OFTEN since both my cat ECU's are disconnected.

I didnt drive the car at all last week, then Saturday, I started her up and she was running like crap, spittin and sputtering, backfiring and trying to stall under load.

I checked all the connectors and everything obvious, and did the whole ECU reset procedure twice. Now she starts and idles fine and smooth, but the exhaust note seems odd. When its parked and I rev the engine, it screams up like normal. The throttle is not quite as responsive as normal, but it doesn't really bog or anything like that.

The actual PROBLEM is, under load, I have NO power! The engine revs up (much more slowly than normal) through all the gears, but i'm just barely coasting! example: 2nd gear WOT to redline, 30 MPH and absolutely NO torque or pulling power!

Here's what I found odd... at normal operating temp, idling in the garage,
The right cat (5-8) is burning at 470 degrees.
The left cat (1-5) is burning at 120 degrees?

    Help?

Ok, I know why the right cat is so cool... upon further inspection, I found that I have NO spark at the coil for the entire right (1-4) bank! I checked the fuses, they're fine... now what?!?

Swap the igniters side-to-side, then the coils. If you've got spares, just put the spare on eachside and see if it changes. Probably the igniter. You're on 4 cyls.

The igniters are the little modules next to the coils on the heat sinks right?
If they are, I swapped them, still no spark on right bank.

    Expert alert:
Is it OK to swap ECU's on these cars or are they programed for a specific side only?

I guess it pays to dig... and as usual, I blew 2 hours, 3 knuckles and my back hurts for nothing!
inside the well for the right side ECU, there is a molex connector, I was looking at that for broken wires, and didn't find any. So I unplugged it and behold, a male pin was bent over and not making contact! So I straightened the pin and plugged it back together, and viola'!

The mystery is, I dont recall ever disconnecting that plug before, even when I redid my interior, I only removed the 2 nuts that hold the ECU's in, I never disconnected anything!

Could it be that this pin has been arcing for years!? I know this much, once I had all 8 firing again, I went on a rage and she ran like a crackhead from the cops!!!

Steve - I repsectuflly disagree, this thread could be very useful, and is proof that checking the connections before trying anything else is invaluable...or in other words start with the easy stuff and ruling it out before moving on to the next step.

And, of course, I am very happy for you that you got this issue settled ;) :)...and I love the metaphor about the crackhead :)

You sure can. The instruction code on each ECU is identical.

+1 on all of it. This thread is gonna save someone a ton of frustration in the future.

Not sure Lane, but I would assume so... I would probably wouldn't hesitate to do it if I was troubleshooting.
