At first glance, I thought the pilot was doing dutch rolls as part of a flight test, but I don't know what would necessitate so many so close to the ground. Maybe someone with flight test experience will chime in. Anyway, looks like he may have had some real issues to deal with; if so, kudos for dropping that sucker in one piece!

Looks like he was having rudder issues -- either it wasn't working at all and just flapping loosely, or its linkage was set far too sensitively. I admire the pilots' skill in getting the aircraft back on the ground in one piece. If I'm not mistaken, I hear applause just after the aircraft lands safely!

Supposedly the opposite was true-- rudder was all they had. No roll.

    From the other thread,
"Looks like a "dutch roll" - indicative of a yaw damper failure or YD being off. On 727 test flights after overhaul one of the checks was to turn the YD off and induce a dutch roll, re-engage the YD and make sure it caught and stopped the dutch roll in less than 2 (IIRC) oscillations. Of course all the pilots wanted to see if they could recover hand flying with the YD off, most could not."

What were they using for lateral control, spoilers?

It certainly looks like that from the footage-- or one spoiler is stuck up.

You could use rudder for lateral control, combined with asymmetric thrust.
