Red Bull chassis difference *SPOILER*

Whatever it is, the RB7 must be the greatest leap forward in F1 design since the F2002 (the fact that it had the radiators in a flatter angle, allowing them to significantly reduce the height of their sidepods, compared to all vertical radiator setups of all other cars, was simple yet brilliant.)...except this, as far as we know, still baffles every aero engineer's mind it seems.

What does Newey get paid? Must be close to 10-15m EU a year?

 

I've heard free passes to every GP and a case of Red Bull.

 

Perhaps they are using some type of torsion bar system and transfering suspension loads into the wing causing it to deflect at speed. When the car is balanced and at rest, the wing would be perfectly rigid and pass all FIA tests, but while moving would deflect the wing enough for an aero advantage.

 

Am still awaiting on answer on last years Illegal Adjustable Suspension. Does anyone remember M.Webbers car bottoming out with sparks flying everywhere during P3 qualifying runs?

 

I don't remember it in qualifying, but I certainly remember it during the race. RB7 runs a huge amount of rake so we are definitely not seeing an rear end scraping this year.

car was scrutineered numerous times just to check that thing out specifically. Never found anything wrong with it, so car was deemed legal. Ferrari etc where lowering their cars as well, but was pretty obvious it happened at the pitstops.

 

Last I heard it was 10M lbs/yr. By far the highest paid engineer in the sport

I think that would be a flagrant violation of the rules and would not get through scrutineering.

Mclaren seem to think they remap there engine for qualifying as well.

 

I don't disagree that it would be in violation, but something is causing the wing to flex or appear to flex while the car is moving, but remain rigid (and legal) while at rest. Some sort of post tensioning cable system might accomplish that. I do not have enough knowledge to make an accusation of cheating, but a few more wings comming off of the Red Bulls might help their competitors understand how they do it. I understand that they run a greater chassis rake than the others, but it certainly appears that the wing position runs lower to the ground than what just chassis rake could account for.

Anyone heard anything about that little "contravention"? [I guess a fine will be forthcoming? The infraction should hurt IMHO - Forget a fine, deduct points! That'll stop anyone doing it again....]

As to the wires/cables - My guess is simple camera feeds - The FIA can put cameras in many (defined) locations, and the loom has gotta be in place for 'em. [And/or it's their own mounts of course]

The thing is it could be just structured to be strong where the FIA test it only, and flexiable else where, or is that just to simple.

Radio camera's ? need no wires.

 

Camera is possibly linked to battery and/or transmitter.

 

IIRC, that was pretty much the conclusion "we" reached - The FIA loads the wing ~12" (?) (300mm in new money ) from the centerline - Just outboard of the mounts - RB have figured a way to make "flexi-carbon" that bends under aero load, but only outside of the test points.

The others are no doubt sitting in front of their 'puters trying to figure out how to do it......

IIRC, deep in the technical regs the entire thing is spec'd - Certain type of connector, power, gnd, signal etc pins are all specified. Then the teams hook in their own recorders/transmitters - Some of the shots looking at the tea tray for example have gotta be *very* revealing.....

I heard the other day that immediately following the crash, everyone had all eyes on the Red Bull front end and wires and every one of the teams requested the RB be reviewed immediately. Charlie Whiting literally ran to the RB pit prior to the car arriving and inspected things. Nothing has been disclosed regarding his inspection yet.

 

Charlie was on scene and the wall wasn't taken down? To be fair he may have just not noticed

 

Actually, I suspect that's the reason for the modesty screen - They have a right to privacy if the FIA are poking around.

Very interested to hear what Charlie has to say - If anything.....
