    hi all
    potentially buying a 1993 30K 386 TS..
Last engine out/belt was at 15K.

Do I need to get it done right away or is 50K the standard rule/5 years ?

How much should I budget for (Canada) for engine out, belt, lube, water pump ?
Just approx what ball park should I be budgeting ?

You do not say how many years ago the service was so how can we answer whether it is needed ?

Some say the belts need to be done every three years. I think every 5 years is okay. If they did not change the belt tensioners / bearings when they did the timing belts at 15k get it done right away. Mileage almost never determines when the next timing belt service is due on these cars.

Pretty much the time (3 to 5 years) determines when the belts are due ... and you will be looking between US $5K and $10K depending of what kind of surprises the mechanic finds during the major.

The 386 TS is a rare "one off" that Enzo Ferrari specially built for track sweeper at Fiorano. A 3.8L V6 engine that was called the 386 TS Ferrari. :D:D

I spent $3500 for my major service about four years ago. That included getting all four wheels powdercoated, and some other non-essential items. I'm sure there are excellent shops that get between $5k and $10k, but you can get good work done for less in some cases. I think the parts are around $1,200 or so. You might also get some surprises that would push the cost of the service to $20k.

Labor alone is 40 hours. Out here in Kalifornia you are looking anywhere from $120 to $160 an hour.

No way you can get an engine out service done in Kalifornia below $6,000.

Even then you are only doing the basics.

I guess I'm glad I don't live in Kalifornia then. I was just giving a real world pricing reference from my own experience. In other words, not every major is over $5k.
Life with a 348 is still not inexpensive. In 5 years of ownership I spent about $12k in maintenance / repairs / upgrades. I felt I was fortunate that the cost was that low.

I plan on using the engine out money for installing a Maxjax setup so that I can do the engine out myself when the time comes. I will be like a kid in a candy store when that engine is sitting on the ground. Being a mechanic for many years of my life, this will be fun. I plan on doing a lot of upgrades and touchups to the engine while it is out. Powder coated valve covers, maybe new headers, Powder coated plenum, clean up engine bay, GCK, etc. I have two years to go before it is time but it is not something I dred. I don't know if I would have gotten my 348 if I would have to go to a garage for service. I am not wealthy by any stretch. Being able to do my own service is one of the main reasons I went for the 348. Good luck with your service. ;)

You can here in Toronto and the service is better than the dealer by far. 27 hours plus parts. Maybe thats because he used to change over an F1 engine in a few hours for Ferrari.

Sounds exactly what I am looking forward to doing with my engine out. :D:D

But now I have to chase suspension bushes all round for the old girl. Will overhaul the front and rear struts and replace the springs also. :):)

Same here, bought the car with no intention of it ever having to see a service bay other than mine. Bought the MaxJax, love it, wish it raised the car a little higher, but works well. Did the major in Jan, no problem, piece of cake for someone with mechanical aptitude. Sounds like we are on the same path, I powder coated the valve covers and like your interior thread I installed the Hill pedals, passenger dead pedal, gauge rings, bling chrome shifter knob and instead of a sub I made boxes and installed 2 6X9's behind the headrests along with a new head unit. Now you just need some fly wheels (I used 360 wheels) and a LeMans grill and you are pimped!

I wish I could do the engine out myself, and not for financial reasons but rather for the adventure of it...being able to work on your own pride and joy with your own hands, it must be such a treat...you guys that can are so lucky, I envy you all in this regard :)

To PAP: I will probably do my suspension bushings while I do my engine out service. Have fun with yours. :)

To Dave: (High five) Glad to hear you like your Maxjax setup! I know it would be nice to have the extra height on the lift but it is not a bad compromise for a garage setup that is removable. When I got the car, it already had 4 6x9's installed behind the headrests. :D I installed a new head unit with bluetooth for phone. So I now have four 6x9's behind my head, Two 6" round speakers in the door, two tweeters in the dash, new head unit, main amp in the trunk, 8" subwoofer in the pass. side console and sub amp inside the console. Sounds good! ;)

To Mike: Yes, it is a great feeling to work on your own car that is for sure. But I think that you are doing a great job getting your hands dirty on your car. Just keep learning and wrenching. You may be ready to do your own engine out service before you know it. ;)
