Hi Guys, Sorry for the stupid questions,but I'm trying to straighten out a mess the PO made.Had to remove my transfer case cover to get out the rounded head fill plug,which is done.First,I have 7 wafer thin washers,and 3 fairly thick washers for the nuts on the outside of the case.Is this correct? Or should they all be the wafer thin washers? Second,the PO stuffed silicon all over the studs,especially where they screw into the tranny,any reason for this? If the studs wick,it should only leak on the OUTSIDE of the case where the nuts are.Am I missing something? Finally,there's a bearing on the inside of the case itself.Should that be attached to the cover.....or over the shaft? Never seen a bearing fitted into a cover before? Part number 7 are gears mounted (placed in the transfer case for the center gear. Parts number 4 and 10 are mounted onto the shaft and held with snap rings and a ring nut. I did a clutch replacement recently and there was no silicon to be found and no leaks. As far as the washers go I can't remember exactly what I had on my car but the diagram shows part 24 as a washer and 10 are required. a std washer and spring washer will do just fine or use a std washer and a nylock nut. as for the sealant used, go with an anaerobic one as silicone is not the right application here. loctite/permatex or wurth both have one (permatex's is loctite). on the over kill side an aviation case sealant can used, it's a bit tackier and brown/black in color but that stuff will seal like nothing else. I like using on the bottom pans, nary leak with that stuff. the bearing race is pressed into the case as it's a support for the mainshaft, there should also be 2 (if i recall right) dowel pins to keep it aligned, another reason why silicon is not to be used.
