I live in the Sierra foothills and twice sometimes three times a day a f16 flies over to land at Mather Airport. Always the same approach (different than the freight carriers).

Mather is a private airport now, just wondering why the air force flies this plane EVERY day? Seems like a waste of jet fuel.

V2- Did you get a tail number so you are sure it is the same plane and is it actually landing or just shooting an approach? USAF pilots do need training, you know, and Mather has a huge runway, left over from the BUFFs, and relatively light traffic.

I live near Bradshaw and Gerber and see these planes as well. They are trainer jets. You may also see some helicopters from time to time.

    You ARE kidding, right? :)

Tcar -- "chemtrails" are just contrails from jet engines operating at altitude. Some in the tin foil hat crowd think they are part of a government program, to spray us with all sorts of nasty stuff from above. I guess all the major airlines are in on it, too.

Chemtrails, related to contrails, but toxic.

Saw a History Channel show about chemtrails. It was good for a laugh.

It does not really matter much, given that fact that the world is more or less going to end this coming weekend.

Not really that strange..... Military aircraft and pilots need to fly on a regular basis to keep everything working. My guess would be that Mather is a convenient place to drop in for an approach and they aren't so busy that a little pilot proficiency work will get in the way.

If you want to really see some traffic you should try hanging out some place along a heavily used military training route. There are places around here that get overflown 30+ times a day by aircraft 3-500' AGL.

As for wasting gas..... It's a bit staggering to think how much gas gets used and I no longer give a rats ass about letting the car run for a few minutes in order to "save the environment" or the like. Just to throw out a ballpark number I have burned 1.5 million gallons of jet fuel so far in my flying :)

I work with one of those tin-foil hat types. He tried to tell me all about these "chemtrails" one day. Thing is, this guy has a degree in physics and works in aerospace! He is also building a dome house in middle-of-nowhere Alaska for when the Earth's poles shift and Alaska ends up in the tropics.

Wow! I guess it just goes to show that sometimes your, ah, "creative" side can easily overwhelm your rational side!

I had someone attempt to educate me about the link between chemtrails and Morgellen's disease, or whatever it's called. Red and blue fibers coming out of the skin, all sorts of symptoms, all due to chemtrails.

    Oh, dear.

Ummm... while bashing conspiracy kooks is a hobby of mine... Geomagtentic reversal is real and we're pretty well due for one.

Frankly, as I assess risks to the planet, this ranks higher than global warming in my book. YMMV.

chemtrails last for a long time in the sky. regular exhaust trails from a jet dissipate quickly. i know it sounds strange, but there is a difference. and the major criss-cross patterns in the sky from chemtrails do not follow any flight patterns - pretty much covering a 'grid' in the sky.

    1. Tell me difference between the residence time of an exhaust trail (con trail) vs. a Chem Trail. Does dissipation=absorption by humans or the opposite?

    2. Define "flight pattern". I'm a pilot and I can tell that there is no "set path" I've flown on any flight. Yes, there are maps that show "victor Airways" but they are almost never followed to a T because you will be moved left or right all the time for traffic/weather or based on how the controller is feeling that day. Also, the width of a Victor airway is 8nm or about 10 statute miles. A plane can be anywhere inside that and still be on the airway. Victor airways are NOT layed out on a grid.

Flying with us to airshows and watching the nuts at Thun Field subjected him to a lot of small airplane fallout too.

Weather and altitude play a big role in the longevity of contrails. For instance, if a front is approaching, you can expect a normal contrail to hang around substantially longer. If the contrail is at an altitude where the winds are really kicking (usually the case), it will get dispersed and seem to be much fatter than a "normal" contrail. Combine that with the pre-described longevity due to atmosphere, and you have a "chemtrail".

When I lived in Puerto Rico in the '60s, I went to an elementary school very near San Juan International Airport and right on the ocean. The P.R. ANG's F-86H's regularly disrupted our classes as they flew what I suspect were training missions over the Atlantic just off the coast. Of course, one day one of them overdid it in a dive and gave us a sonic boom!

(Puerto Rico Air National Guard = PRANG. An unfortunate choice of initials!)

    Unbelievable...

CONTRAILS are subject to weather conditions, temperature, humidity, pressure... like clouds, some last a long time, some for minutes.

Chemtrails are only produced by planes flying very close to the ground in patterns over crops.
