No. The caveman way we take out the main shaft you actually need the dif still in the case. But if all you are doing is replacing the outer bearings I don't see a reason to tear apart the whole box.
I dont know Ernie,im just afraid that the inside Bearing are bad too. I allready took out the faulty Bearing and the Mainshaft one. my consern is that the mainshaft doesnt play that much us the Layshaft so I guess that the inside ones have a problem too Thanks for the Info about the Dif
I suppose the 4 layshaft bearings and the one outside mainshaft bearing. The bad thing is that i need to tear apart the whole mainshaft too for the job!
i wanted to give you all an update on what happened meanwhile to my gearbox(es). Steve (theonlyest) was nice enough to sell me his spare box, i picked it up in Vegas and proceeded to install it. As Steve had warned me, there was a massive amount of black "gunk" in there, which i was able to flush out after 3 (three) gear oil changes with cheap gear oil. The good news is that the box shifts flawlessly and there is only a very minor whine in first gear, but i think that is "sort of stock", very very minor. I am pretty happy (so far ). i still want to tackle the repair of the old box, and i talked to this guy who claims that he can rebuild the shaft(s) and gears for ~2 grand, we'll see. I will keep you posted on that. i did have a bit of a "scare" getting towed back after the first drive with the box installed, but the issue (car died on the freeway) was unrelated, essentially what appeared to be a bad contact on the cam sensor (the connecting plug was cracked and some cables had started shorting out). easily fixed and I am back in business. I am planning to do one final gear oil change in ~50 miles and switch to the mobil synthetic. i am ready for action, when's the next drive in SoCal?
I'm so glad everything worked out Reiner! That slight whine you're hearing is normal, mine does it too, always has. It was great to meet you, and I hope you decide to do the Paupers Run next month!
