Does anyone happen to know what these relays & fuses do in the front compartment of my (UK) 89 ABS 328? Also wondering why the one on the left has no fuse ...... ?

Those are for your ABS system. If you're having any issues and want to read the codes in the computer, you put a low amp fuse in the left relay and the next time you start the car the lights on the dash will start to blink out any error codes in the brake system.

I would like to have some instructions on the ABS code reading and what the codes mean. Any pointers?

My pleasure. Send me a private message with your email address and I'll send you a great cheat sheet. Unfortunately for me, I know way too much about reading these codes.

A while ago I trawled through the wiring diagram trying to find out what that missing fuse did! Its marked as a test connector so that all makes sense now!
Also in this area there are a couple of wiring harness connectors which are just dangling, found that on the ABS cars they never bothered to delete the redundant wires from the main harnessing, such as brake fluid warning light, and these are not used on ABS cars so they are left unconnected.
