Just got back from a ferrari dealership to have my fluids changed.Mentioned that I saw a small oil leak on the floor. They showed me where it was leaking and gave me the bad news that the whole assembly had to be replaced. Ouch!!! The f430 is 2005 with 8700 miles on it.They say you have to replace the whole assembly..No individual parts.has anyone else had this problem.Van

Sorry to hear that. What was the estimated damage?

You may have a burned out or problem F1 gear box that needs replacing. "However", before I wrote the check, I would elaborate as to where and what is leaking to the members here. There could be numerous small items that seem big at the time that can be dealt with and repaired without lost driving time and needless money out of your pocket. Allthough, most Ferrari mechanics from a dealer are straight shooters---usually?

I have a 2005 430 that had a F1 problem; This is one of many threads that may help you.

I think I am confusing a few things here. The F1 system is not leaking.the gear box is leaking oil where the hydraulic unit with all the hydraulic lines is attached to the side of the transmission box. The oil is brown and not red. hope this helps a little. Will attach a picture tomorrow. thanks van

There's a really good wrench here in Naples @F1 who just got done fixing a Maserati GT transmission problem where the dealer wanted to replace the whole F1 unit for ~$24,000. He sourced relays from Germany and had the client out on the road for about 1/4 of what the original estimate would be. Like the others say, get it checked by a good second set of eyes before writing out what could be a substantial check.

Bear in mind also that it's unlikely that a main dealer will offer you a repair for an item. They'll generally just shrug and say it's broken and needs to be replaced. It sounds like maybe you have a chunk taken out of the main housing causing oil leak but as suggested by others it's very likely that something like that can be repaired.

To be fair to the dealer involved he could not recommend a repair as he couldn't possibly give a warranty on it and probably Ferrari wouldn't like them to offer such a service.

Best of luck but I'm sure you're likely to find a solution that doesn't involve replacement of entire unit.

Does it still function? If so, invest in a small oil pan, check the oil regularly and drive the car till it is a real problem...oil leaks are normal for older Ferraris, why spend $24K to fix an oil lea?

I just replaced that part on my 360CS, it is the F1 actuator although if it were leaking it the fluid would be red, not brown unless the system hasn't been flushed in a long long time. While there are no internal replacement parts from Ferrari, they can be disassembled cleaned and resealed (although your dealer will never do that). Aslo, I believe that Ferrari of Seattle (second hand info) has a kit and rebuilds them. Finally, before spending $24K I would look at a used parts - the path that I took. PM for more info.

    Questions:
    1. Can you post an image of the actual leak? Maybe not because it is up under the plastic under tray.
    2. Can you tell us exactly how much fluid you have found per drive and park on the floor? Example; 3-4 drops <1ml, etc.
    3. What is the estimate for repairs?

    Recommendations:
    1. Get a second opinion from a local indi shop, if the price quote for the repair from the dealer makes you uncomfortable. If you dont have a local indi picked out, ask for suggestions on fchat based on your location.

    Comments:
    1. I agree with "Jagbuff" somewhat. A few drops of fluid that you investigate and have verified will not cause a serious failure if left leaking might not be cause for repair. My last Ferrari always leaked 4-5 drops of oil after every drive. I replaced the oil pan gasket at great effort (shift linkage went through oil pan), and the leak was reduced to 1-2 drops per drive. Should have left it at 5 drops. It was so little fluid that it would have taken 10 years to leak out my 7 quarts, and the Ferrari required adding oil on a regular basis anyway. Each situation is different.

If you spend 10-20K to fix a few drops of fluid that causes no other issues, you may make too much money ;)

it was tongue and cheek, having owned several older Ferraris I am almost disappointed that my newer car doesn't leak...makes it harder to know when the oil is low ;)

This is where it stands. The hydraulic acturator unit has to replaced.no separate parts. have to buy it as a unit. what are your thoughts on calling FNA to do some complaining and see if they would replace it or pay for part of it. Why not.5 yr. old f430 with 8700 miles on it..no abuse. Is there a dept./person that I can call to plead my case so to speak.the unit it's costs approximately $11,000. plus labor. Has anyone else had to replace this unit on their ferrari? thanks for your help and comments. It is what it is.

I am curious why it needs replacing? does it not work which means the car will not shift? or is it simply leaking.

Leaks can be repaired sometimes with not much effort. Does the leak come from where the hydraulic lines attach to the gear box? What did the mechaninc state on his write-up. If he wrote "Gear box needs replacing" and that is it-------I would have a lot of questions for him.

Buy the way; I can not stand a leaking vehicle, no matter what kind of car it is. Especially a FERRARI.--------- Its like walking around with a runny nose that you never wipe while letting it drip on furniture---------Thats just my thoughts.
