Has Rosberg ever been a standout? All those years of him driving a tour bus made him invisible to me.

    fair enough.

but he's doing well against hamilton who was, apparently, hugely superior in talent to Alonso when they were team mates, so button must be better than Alonso.

    good logic? :)

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned this, but all Rosberg has to do to become the #1 official driver (he's already the #1 performancewise :) for a major team is wait a year, no? Well, now the debate is if MB is a major team, or just a middle packer < he he>. And no, he's no Vettel.

If Nico was even to Alonso, he would be the lead driver at RBR, Ferrari or McLaren right now. I think he is a talented driver, but lacks the consistency of the best guys. I would not take him over Jensen Button, while I would definitely take him over Massa at this point, and probably over Webber. So let's say that he's somewhere between Button and Webber/Massa right now.

I used to have that opinion until watching him alongside Hamilton at McLaren. He's more an efficient, tactical driver than aggressive one, but he's very effective at what he does.

I would consider him an "underrated" driver as opposed to my initial strong opinion that he was the 'most overrated driver on the grid...maybe in F1 history'. Brawn saw the consistency and efficiency that the rest of us missed and knew he could ride that to a WDC.

I never thought that Hami was superior to Alonso (SRTMike thinks that). They were fairly equally matched.

That's the logic I certainly use when comparing these drivers. I consider Button only a hair behind Alonso on most days and Alonso and Hamilton equal most days (Zo got a raw deal at Mcl). Alonso has moments of unbelievable brilliance no one can discount which definitely puts him in an ultra-elite category which I definitely believe Vettel and Hamilton have yet to reach. I want to see Vettel in a mediocre car with a teammate just as good as him or even nearly as good and see if he cracks. I have a feeling we will see something like that in the coming years.

The one thing you can count on is that the worm will turn. The best measure of a driver is how he copes with a second rate car. Seb will get a chance to show us what can do then.

Nico hasn't been consistent? How so? Compared to the massive inconsistency of Vettel last season? Not even close. Also, anyone care to show me how Nico's driving isn't every bit as surgically precise as Vettel's? The only difference between the two is the car.

I think the article is rating Vettel a little too high in my opinion. At least Nico knows how to overtake someone without taking them out.

mate...are you confusing Vettel with Hamilton?

Hamilton hops straight into the best car on the grid that year. He's never known anything in F1 apart from a top team.

    How's that compare to Vettel?

    You're a funny boy.

Glad to bring a little mirth into your otherwise humdrum life ;)
Who said anything about Hamilton? Sooner or later every driver has to deal with a second tier car and then it becomes apparent how good he really is.

Even if you sit in the best car you have to be able to perform. Hami went straight to the top as a rookie, that speaks for him.

Just look at all the other guys who ended up in top cars and didn't know what to do: Surer, De Cesaris, Andretti jr to name a few

I think you both missed my point, which was that Vettel has already been in a mid field team.

No. He wasn't the complete driver back then. Even last year he was still maturing.

I'm getting an odd feeling that we agree about Seb. I think he is the real deal and hasn't let his WDC go to his head. The naysayers won't be satisfied that it isn't all down to the car until he "proves" himself in an inferior mount.

Don't the naysayers know that he won a GP in a Minardi?

;) Truth is that no matter what some drivers accomplish there will be some fans that will always be down on them. Beit Seb, Lewis, Michael, Alonso, Massa etc. etc.

I don't think it has to be an inferior car at all, he can gain my admiration in the current red bull - he just needs to provide us with some ballsy entertaining racecraft much like Webber did back in China - lots of Webber haters changed their mind about him then didn't they?

Seb gained a few point with me in the last race when he remained cool & calm under immense pressure from Hamilton but he's still a long way off from me calling him truly great driver though.

    lol...probably not.

I think he is too, but I think he's done his time in an inferior mount already.

    Yeah...and i don't get it.

IMO I rate Vettel very high. I would put in the same league as Alonso. The kid is 23 and is only going to get faster. When he came into Redbull, the car was mediocre and he did pretty well with the car considering how young he was. The kid is amazing. Hamilton is good, but he has always had the best equipment. He went straight to a good team. I dont know how he would do in a crappy car.
