His car was garbage in 2009 until the end of the season (when it actually ended up being one of the best)

Pole for Vettel on Saturday would put him on 20 for his career, equal with Alonso. He's already ahead of Hamilton

In today's F1, the car is everything.
If I owned a team and had the choice of a brilliant driver and less than perfect car, or a mediocre driver and the perfect car, the perfect car wins every time.
There are at least 10 drivers in the 24 man field that would contend for a podium spot and wins if they had Vettel's Red Bull. And yes there is definitely a difference between the #1 and the #2 car in every team.

It's almost all about the car and hardly at all about the driver.

Just look at Button and the Brawn car car when they had a technological edge for the first half of the season. He ran away from the field. Today he is in the number 2 car at McLaren and he probably won't see a podium again.

Not at all, Mansell had been around a LONG time before he won his WDC.

You mean like the win he produced for Toro Rosso before he went to RB?
So what if it was on a wet track - it was wet for everyone else, too.

Don't jump on me. I'm just saying that some folk will need more convincing and that some will never get behind him.

Its much more the car today than it's ever been before but I think the fact that we have a close parity among the very top drivers accentuates that effect.

Totally agree. For all we know Di Resta would be as quick as Vettel if he were in the RB7. Vettel hasn't proven much to me yet as the car is just eons beyond what anyone else has ever had. I think it's an even larger gap than the F2004 had on the rest of the field as the F2004 was not qualifying .500+ clear of the field.

    +1.

    My thoughts exactly...

To take a bottom feeder and win showed an IMMENSE amount of talent...

He EARNED his way into a top team, it didn't just fall into his lap ;)

True, but alot had to do with the diffuser situation. I think the Ferrari was worse than the Mclaren, I think Kimi did a great job that year for Ferrari considering how bad the car was. We know how bad the Ferrari was because both Fisi and Luca were back markers.

Kimi took that POS Ferrari and drove the race of the year at Spa IMHO.

That's it for him this year. Unless something breaks or it rains the podium contenders are the the two Red Bulls, the #1 car from McLaren and the #1 car from Ferrari.

Everyone else is filling empty space on the track

+1 Brawn was not alone, I too saw that much, and took alot of flak on here for it.

Brazil 09 a flawless and amazing drive to clinch the title, when everyone was still saying he had lost the plot and was going to crack under the pressure.

Button's style is too subtle for some to appreciate ;)

His style is great for technical tracks like Suzuka and Malaysia. If there is a smooth way through any of that, Button will find it.

This is not a knock on Button or any driver for that matter, rather a commentary on the fact that, with very few exceptions in unusual circumstances, the driver with the best car tends to win.
I'm certain that Button, in Vettel's Red Bull, would win consistently.
The same could be said for Rosberg, Petrov etc etc
