Sorry for the noob question but I've searched and Googled and cannot find a definitive answer. I'm looking at a 94 348 long distance. Does it have a 134a or R-12 system?

The info I found shows R12 but I am sure there is someone here with a '94 that can verify. Mine is a '91.

Thankyou, in Australia the car (by law) would have R134A. The change over date was 1991, my car has R134A. Its a 91 model. :):)

Being a USA car, should be R12. Unless someone has "upgraded" the system to R134A. :):)

Good luck with the purchase. :):)

My '94 348 (German) had R12. It's filled now with R413a which is an R12 direct replacement. Environmentally friendly like R134a but with the lubrication propoerties of R12.

Unfortunately it's also difficult to find nowadays.

Has anyone gone through the seals and gaskets etc., necessary to convert a 348 to R134a?

It is all a myth Drew. ;);)

Two a/c experts at work with over 60 yrs experience both told me that. So I am running with it. :D:D

Just replace the orings you 'upset', change the oil in the compressor and be on your way. :D:D

I would personally change all the orings in the system once the R12 has been removed. Wouldnt take much to change them out, just some time. Change all the orings, vac down and fill with R134A. :):)

Yeah, to be honest, I read similar stuff on a Mercedes forum.

My plan would be to try and get replacement "O" rings in the R134a compatible material (not sure what that is yet though!) and do as you say.

The perfectionists would probably want to get new rubber hoses made up but my car loses so much out of the (new!!!) compressor shaft seals that any permeation through the rubber hoses isn't gonna make a lot of difference!

Thanks for moving this idea into my comfort zone Pap!

I find it a shame that R413a never really caught on and is now more or less obsolete.

    Not a problem mate. :):)

Also, by law we can ONLY use R134A here in Australia. Since 1990/1991. There is plenty of the stuff available in Australia if you need some. :p:p

    :D

    R413a (SCEON) is 88% R134a + 9% R218 + 3% R300a

It was designed to replace the R12 in older aircons without having to flush the system and replace the compressor oil. It works with the old R12 compressor oils and has the same lubrication properties as R12 but with the environmental bit from R134a.

As usual, because the industry saw more profit in offering conversion kits or cooercing people to buy a newer car it didn't catch on. Also the stuff itself was rather expensive so the profit margins couldn't be so big and still be able to sell it.

It would have been the perfect solution for our older Ferris.
