That's really gross exageration. From a racing point of view, Senna was 3 times world champion with 61 wins (I think). Kubica merely won just one GP (I think) and never remotely looked like a potential WDC. A good driver, yes, but nothing exceptional at all. He never dominated the field nor looked like being among the best 3 in any year he competed. Beside, he didn't die, but got injured. Senna's loss was an earthquake in F1. Kubica stopping will go almost unnoticed. Heidfeld does a good job, so is Petrov at Renault; Kubica is history for me.
Thank you Steve and Il Vecchio! The 2 years have been a hell of an ordeal. I haven't really made a big deal out of it on this site because I don't wan't to be a downer to everyone else. My friends that I spend time with and also my friends on F-chat have been wonderful company during this time. Everyone that knows about the big forklifts that can carry multiple pallets side by side say I shouldn't have a left foot right now... Am I bitter about it? YES!!! Every F***ing step I take on my left foot is like stepping on a knife! But I had to think ahead about the rest of my life and not throw away my career for the sake of 3 months pay... that was one of the hardest things I've had to do in my life. Even harder when you think of the yo-yos that spill a little coffee on themselves at a McDonalds and walk away with millions of dollars! I don't think it's fair at all, but I am trying to think long-term and make the smartest decisions possible. I did what was literally impossible and I hope and pray that Kubica with his great will is able to do the same... Frank
Great story indeed, but right there you're making our point: you're back, but not 100%. And your injury wasn't nearly as critical as Kubica's. Let me ask you a relevant question: Could you win the 100m hurdle olimpic gold medal with your foot? And keep in mind 'could' only means to have the physical ability to run at your full speed, not that you have the actual speed to win . That's what Kubica is up against. Even without his accident, he might have never become a WDC (he was no Senna up to his accident, as noted). But without 100% recovery, he has no chance to win another F1 race. But yes, all of us would be delighted to witness a miracle and see that happen. Good day gang.
Guess that tort reform everybody is always yelling about really paid off for the company... again. Really sorry to hear about your accident, but maybe we should re-visit this rush to the chinese way of doing business, i.e. you get hurt at work due to no fault of your own and shazam it's all your fault so make it on your own, oh and don't sue for pain and suffering and a permanent injury that will only get worse in time, just go out and make it on your own... You have to love those conservative types...
Sorry Frank for your horrendous foot story. Back to Kubica: http://www.motorsport-aktuell.com/automobil/formel-1-kubica-sauer-auf-lopez-und-renault-3816166.html He is ticked off at Renault and Lopez for publicly writing him off for this year. Also apparently by now he is a "free agent" and not necessarily a Renault driver anymore: Rumors have it that he can step away from Renault if he has not been driving for them for 3 months. If true he is now free to negotiate with other teams and apparently he is in contact with other teams.
Frank it sounded like a horrendous thing to go through. Hopefully with time it will just get better and better, I had a similar but no where near as bad smashed up foot, me on a motorbike, a pretty girl on push bike, car coming the other way....say no more it hurt..
I think it matters little at this point if he is talking to other teams as he won't be able to drive any F1 anymore. The article also mentions that he is now able to walk again. Well, ahem, great I suppose. He also eats now on his own. Not quite the stuff F1 drivers are made of.
He's a typical Pole. Tough as nails. I'm sure he'll come back from the injuries to lead a normal life. But I agree that regaining his abilities in F1 is pretty much impossible now. Hopefully we at least see him at LeMans or DTM in the future.
I read about this yesterday on aktuel's website. Interesting stuff. At the moment he absolutely needs Renault so he better not be too angry. Renault is his ticket to knowing if he is still able to get behind the F1 wheel. I'm not sure how many teams would announce surrendering a car to him during a Friday practice.
