We haven't had to evacuate the last couple of years so I think we are due for a little excitement this year. Are you "prepared?" I thought about buying a few things during last weekend's tax holiday but didn't get around to it. Apparently the newspaper and the city aren't prepared either. Below are a few screen shots from this morning. The first is after clicking 2011 Contraflow map on the paper's hurricane page. The next two are after clicking City Assisted Evacuation Plan and Family Emergency Planning on the city's Hurricane Preparedness page. Ugh. Steve, I come here to escape all of this hurricane crap. But since you brought it up I was concerned I threw some money away with this tax holiday by putting the 20KW generator in back in October and not taking advantage of this "tax holiday". If you read the fine print it is only on the first $1500.00 per item of the state's sales tax so I "lost" out on about $70 of the 800 plus in tax I paid putting that badboy in.
Thank you sir for your contribution to this thread and to the state coffers! If I flee west I know where to go.
The gas in my generator has been in there since, God, whatever that storm was after Katrina that cut the power in N.O. for some days. There's probably a quarter of a tank in there. Y'all think if i just top it up with fresh gas it'll be okay?
I'd drain as much out as you could, throw some fresh gas in and agitate as much as possible, drain again, and then fill up with fresh. Unless you can easily drop the tank to clean it out.
This coming from the former owner of a 308, 328, & 348. I guess that redhead blew your mind and erased your memory!
Well she blew something not really my mind but I have been told I think with ... oh wait you were talking about the Testarossa red head I get it now
My wife keeps suggesting we buy 5 gallon gas cans. I have a few. Haven't fired the generator in a few years but I put fresh oil in it after the heavy use of Gustav and carb was run dry. I actually put a charge on the battery for it a few months ago thinking I'd fire it up and change the oil again. Didn't happen. Maybe this weekend. Or not.
I got a tour of some of the new levee system today by the Army Corps of Engineers and was EXTREMELY impressed with what they all have done. It is astounding really. Incredible ever still is how little is know/accepted by the public about it. They need to do some serious PR work to get the word out because it really needs to be touted. Up to snuff for a 100 year storm officially. Unofficially believed to withstand a 500 year storm...Crazy!
Without a deep commitment to true, coastal restoration... all of south LA is living on borrowed time. 100 year protection doesn't mean much if these types of storms happen once every decade. Not to mention, today's 'map' of coastal Louisiana is rendered in errata. We still draw the shape of Louisiana like a full boot. Only, this boot has its sole, toe cap and most of its heel torn off. This means wave action, tidal surge, winds, salt water intrusion will all exacerbate and play a major role in destroying us in due time. We've preached, begged, cried, demanded and voted for coastal restoration for four decades. Yet the politicians, the über-rich, big gov, big oil, big banks, et al - all those connected to the aforementioned - keep playing their hands so that the chips are stacked only on their side of the table. No one else matters. Read about the Great Flood of 1927. Read how the wealthy used dynamite to blow the levees south of NOLA, flooding and destroying the lives of all in St Bernard and Plaquemines (when there was no actual need for this to be done!). No one cares about future generations, Mother Earth or progress. Too little, much too late. Politics and those with greed will be the downfall of our civilization.
