Search is on for an OEM radio

It was dealer installed per customer preference, only the antenna and speakers were Factory wired.....

Blaupunkt was a popular choice.

 

I have an 84 QV and the original dealer-installed radio is a Blaupunkt Sacramento.

 

My 1987 has a Kenwood pullout unit. I'd forgotten about their existence. I'll never replace it, the pull out stereo is as much a time capsule as the rest of the car. The paperwork for the stereo was still with the owners paperwork.

Too bad I got rid of all my cassettes years ago. I miss my Men at Work cassette, Midnight Oil, UB 40, English Beat, etc.

 

I have this neat old Blaupunkt unit if anyone is interested. High quality unit back in the day. Pull-out model Aspen CD42 with mounting sleeve, wire harness and original manual.

There was no OEM radio. Any appropriate vintage high-end unit would be acceptable.

 

The correct answer is. . . none! (At least, according to quite a few f-chatters and FCA/RMR members, who insist that the "music of the engine is the only music you need."

It's true that no radios were installed in 308's at the factory, but that Blaupunkts seem to be the favorite. These older Blaupunkts appear to have been quite reliable, while I and a number of others have found that quality deteriorated in the later ones.

But that's probably not an issue for you since you want to be as original as possible. I would say that any period-correct unit you like would be fine.

 

If you really aren't interested in the radio, you may want to try to find the plastic plate that covered the radio hole when the car left the factory. I don't know how easy these are to find, though...

I have the original radio that was at one time installed in the car. It is in a box in the garage. This is available and I think the manual for it is in the paperwork.

Have the blanking plate in the same box. That is not available. It is metal and covered with vinyl over a thin foam. I will eventually get this recovered and then the current radio will become surplus.

I am not at home so cannot access any additional information.

Neat find - I think the old Acapulco units were only about 7w/ch so you would probably want to pair an amp with it.

 

I'm a little confused.

An original radio is a government requirement for collector plates, and the insurance company will only insure the car as a "collector vehicle" if it has the original radio - do I have that right?

But it's an insurance company representative, not a government employee, who will approve or reject your radio as original?

My feeling is that, if you'd rather just listen to the "symphony" of the engine anyway, you might as well buy a piece of metal and cover it with black vinyl. Who's going to know you made it yourself?

 

If he just wants a radio for ins. then he doesn't even have to hook it up. He can just stick it in the dash. If he wants to listen to the radio then I agree up the power with a separate amp.

 

A blanking plate is pretty easily made, and ReOriginals has the correct dash vinyl, IIRC....

I want that CD player Jim400i......now, to mount that unit a Sawzall to the dash and delicate operation will be required, the opening on the early cars is a "rectangle with knob holes"....

 

I dunno, some dual element door speakers and it would sound pretty good, it's right there at your elbow after all.....

If the car didn't come with a radio, how can they require that it have an original radio? If it had a radio, it wasn't the one that came with the car since no radio came with the car.

Hey Tex - ok it is yours. I have a new set of Blaupunkt speakers I bought to go with it, then changed my mind and decided to go with an Alpine unit. I do this kind of thing all the time.

I've developed a few sources for the Ferrari stuff. Really enjoy it. It detracts from my real job so I am probably losing money overall. Still...old Ferrari parts...what fun!

Go to eBay, search for "Blaupunkt cassette" and you will find exactly what you are looking for.

 

I removed this 'as delivered' Blaupunkt Model Tuscon radio from my 1980 308 a dozen years back. The front bezel is cracked...radio thought to work. Any value here?
