Falls under the how to fix a Ferrari for dingbats category: Just got Verell's fuel injector puller. Looks just as advertised and delivered quickly..thanks. Now how to use? Problem is when i turn the head nut with a 16 mm socket the nut just keeps moving up the threads closer to the head nut and never puts upward pressure on the sleeve and in turn never pulls the injector out. I tried tightening the nut as tight as i could but as soon as you turn headnut clockwise it loosens it (nut on threads). If i turn headnut counter clockwise it eventually unscrews from the top of the injector. I know it's something simple and obvious so would someone just tell me what I'm doing wrong? Thanks
Once you get the whole thing assembled, HOLD the bolt head, tighten the nut on top of the sleeve. This LIFTs the bolt and of course, the injector attached to the bottom of it. Hope this helps, Rick Image Unavailable, Please Login
Dont think these auto haus seals are the same. Hard to tell since old one is shredded. Nope wider than the aluminum hex ring itself...damn. A few more pictures in old threads would have really explained a lot. Pictures worth a thousand words as they say. Puller is fantastic..thanks for the response.
Destroying the old seals is common. I killed at least 5 of mine (but replaced them all) New ones look like these. The Super Lube was a tip from Verell. It makes installation very easy. Once you get the knack of the Verell tool, it works really smooth and no chance of damage like using a claw hammer or a "popper" tool. That Verell is a Saint for us. These injectors are basically designed for Mercedes and VW (Scirroco, Rabbit era). On those cars there is a plastic like bung in the manifold and the notch on the injector gets a fat O-ring. The O-ring snaps into the plastic bung. On our cars there is a rubber sleeve that fills the metal cap. That sleeve has this O-ring integrated (molded) into its center hole. When you say snaps into the plastic bung what do you mean plastic? Isn't that round silver outer sleeve aluminum? Im talking about the one that needs the 12mm drive socket to remove. The piece that farthest to the right in your last pic next to the injector. Edit: Oh, i see bung is on the VW's not our cars.
Stuart, are you saying there's four pieces to this injector? 1) injector 2) rubber sleeve 3) o-ring 4) metal cap Is this correct?
Only the early "i" cars have the o-ring/captive cap design ramosel shows here. IIRC with the QVs the O-Ring design changed.
Sorry, I am jittery right now. I am tired and bit happy and just got a VERY BAD annyonomous email. I get them. Old occupational hazard. Is this a "STUMP the Chump" question? I can look up the parts manual just like you can. My bet- 2 O-rings plus plastic white bushing. But if yours is in the gray zone ... who knows. Ferrari doesn't.
Just finished updating my injectors on an '81. Here is what I discovered and used. Tried using a socket wrench to unscrew the injector assembly, but this just stripped out the metal sleeve holding the injector seal. Ended up getting a VW injector puller and bolting it to a slide hammer. [Fig 1 & 2] This worked great, but you do have to put some force behind it. Once the injector is out, use a 12mm Allen wrench socket tip on a ratchet to remove the metal sleeve and rubber seal. Did not have a doughnut seal in mine, only the sleeve. It will sheer off part of the sleeve seal, but you will not be recycling them anyway. [Fig 3] The newer injector seal is a green doughnut type and the holder is a VW part. [Fig 4 & 5] Notes: Remove the engine cover for better access. The injectors were the original steel, version 10 & 14. Replacements are brass version 47. I think i have just a rubber seal and no separate o-ring like the 328's have. Somehow i got replacement rubber seals that are to big for the metal caps. 1. yes 2 .yes 3. no 4. yes 3 pieces total 1980 gtsi USA spec.
My injector holders are aluminum and silver where yours are brown and appear to be plastic. Verell's injector puller is great.
The orginals were metal, probably aluminum. The replacements are a plastic. I had my reservations at first, but since they are mounted to the intake pressure is not and issue, and have not had any issues since the install.
You sure? Post a pic of all your parts. The injectors w/rubber seal fit pretty tight and will not go together dry very easily at all, from my experience.
I think you are missing the transition here. From your pictures, your car is a QV. It was not a replacement, it was and evolution. "Originals" (GTSi/GTBi) were a ferrous metal. Later (QV) they transitioned to a non-metallic (not sure of plastic type) seat and used an O-ring to seal between the injector and seat much like the earlier Mercedes and VW counterparts. What I don't know is whether the two are interchangeable or not. I suspect not as I believe the threaded portion is the QV manifold for the injector seat is larger than the threaded portion of an "i" manifold Rick

This is an '81 GTBi 2 valve. There is a brass injector holder that is a little smaller, but would not fit mine. No sweat. As far as I can tell they are. The injector and doughnut seal fit in to the plastic holder (larger) and the brass holder (smaller).

Your injector seal # shows up as just an o-ring and not the thicker rubber seal. Will these little o-rings work on the 308i? I thought the o-ring was just for the 328. Only place i find the thicker black rubber seal is here: http://www.superformance.co.uk/a-308/carb.htm Half way down page.
Correct, the o-ring and plastic holder will work in place of the thicker rubber seal and metal holder, on the 308. And Superformance is the only place I found that had the rubber seal, but I don't think they stock the metal holders.
