My clutch engages at about 85 to 90% of the way up and I've got a feeling it should probably be engaging farther down.

For those of you with 348's... where in the pedal travel does your clutch engage/disengage?

Just FYI, I had the clutch repacked about 2,000 miles ago and it looked nearly perfect, so I doubt I need a clutch. Maybe an adjustment? Any thoughts?

    thanks!

I have/had the same. My clutch engages at about 85%. I was ALMOST sure I needed a new clutch, but when the mechanic took it apart, it looked almost new, so I left it alone. I have driven two other 348s and both were the same. Also, late mode 348s (92 and up) have a hydraulic clutch = Not adjustable.

My '91 348 clutch starts to engage at around 30% off of the floor. Not sure why there would be a difference.

I would check to see if your slave cylinder leaks. If so, find the leak and fix it. Then i would bleed the clutch line again.

Mine around the same. I have a twin plate clutch in mine.

If it is grabbing WAY up there, one would think the clutch plate/s are worn?

I have a twin and it was grabbing very high up - worked ok for a bit but I lost her during a stop and go traffic situation. First I lost 1st gear - then 2nd and 3rd. Lot's of white smoke just to get her into a parking lot. Not good.

I'd have it looked at ASAP if I were you.

    Does she slip at all?

No, no slipping yet... I just figure it's best to address it now than wait until it becomes a problem. I took it by my mechanic yesterday so he could drive it and he thought it felt wrong. He's opened a slot for me Monday morning to have a closer look. I'll post the results.

Thanks! It's good to get a sense of how other cars' clutches activate. With any luck it'll be a quick (and inexpensive) fix.

Funny this thread should come up...mine engages at about the 80-85% range, but lately it doesn't feel as strong as it has in the past...maybe mine is on the way out, but no slippage so far.

The clutch on my ss engages at about the same point you have described. Thought I might have an issue but after investigation my mechanic says it's in good shape.

UPDATE - My mechanic had a look at it and he said the clutch looked alright. He agreed that it engaged a bit high, but there's no slippage at all right now. He told me to pay attention and watch for any signs of slipping. He said it could last for years that way, but when it does eventually slip, all I'd have to do was make an appointment and throw some money at him. :)

A quick test to try at home mate-

Pull the park brake on hard.
    Start engine
    Place car in 4th gear
Slowly release the clutch while bring the RPM up
Put your foot HARD on the brake and try to drive the car

If the engine stalls, then the clutch is ok. If the engine doesnt stall, that means the clutch is slipping.

I dont know which method your mechanic used to diagnose, but he may be right. But you can check at home yourself anyways. :)

I agree that this is a good way to check the clutch. Just don't test it for very long! :D
