    Hi John

    Everything is going well.
The special cam nuts and the smog pulley nut came off so easy, reason was I soaked them for about 1 1/2 week with WD40, that's the trick if you have the time.

Now my dilemma is that it looks like there is a snap ring holding a sealed brg. in place, see attachment. I am sure the brg. does not hold the oil in, so I really do not want to hear that the seal is on the inside of the cover.
If that's the case, or not, how do I get to the seal? Help bob

There are two variations... seal on the outside and an open bearing behind it and of course, your version - sealed bearing on the outside and the seal behind it. Some really good threads here helped me find the tools and do the work. Here's what few keystrokes on the search page found that helped me

Just done ours a couple of weeks ago and it is really an easy job as long as you have the bearing puller. The seal is behind the bearing and is extracted by the sheetmetal screw and slide hammer. You have to destroy the race to get the bearing out. Start to finish includling a call to Dave Helms about 4hrs. first time. I did have the bearings and puller ready to go. One word of caution, I would order the bearings and seals local. I ordered from Super and got the other ones. (seal on outside / bearing on inside) Good for Tex cost me time. Another note, the WSM says not to reuse the timing belts. I had only 3K on my belts when I changed the seals and bearings after a call to Dave I agreed that it isn't worth $60 to find out if the belts would fail after taking a second tensioning. Lost

As I mentioned I was in doubt of what the WSM said so I called Dave. What a great guy!
Anyway I know what you mean but I don't have the time on these cars that a few guys like Dave Helms has. I called and we briefly discussed the seal because mine was so far gone there was only the metal shell left , no lip at all. Then I mentioned what I had read about not re-tensioning the belts. After what you went through ,with the valve, I personally would be gun shy to do anything that leaves doubt in your mind but that's just me. Tom

PS THE BEST ,you have already sampled the worst! Also your belt ,at least one, received a fair amount of stress induced when the valve got cozy with the rest of the bits in there.

    Yeh I know

At this point, would it not be easier for me to just take the cover off?

It looks like all I have to do is to pull the bottom studs out which holds the bottom of the cover then slip the cover off. We had to pull the cam cover studs out along with some of the air conditioner stud.

It sounds better to me to do that if there is know surprises. Is there?

That does afford you the opportunity to also replace the inner bearings. They are oil bathed so generally in good shape anyway.

But, removing the pieces from the outside is really quite easy using the processes and tools the others have found for us. It was a simple afternoon job.

Rick Would not even know where to start pulling the brgs. to get to the seal.

If the brgs. in the hsg. will slip over the shafts, I would feel more at ease.

So my question is will the hsg. slip over the shafts with the brgs. ?

    Thanks bob

    No Rick I am not.

It just looks so easy to take off 14 nuts and remove 6 studs. And then if the gears slide off easy ,do they? Then I will replace the inner brgs.

Hell Everything I touch I replace so whats 2 more brgs. Plus going into it this far I just would not feel comfortable. Thanks bob

    You are very welcome!!

With my head injury, I'm not driving (yet!) so the car is my therapy and part of my goal setting... and with all this information, it does nobody any good to hoard it. It's there for the sharing so it can hopefully help others.

I have been following your pix while I was up front replacing heater hoses, then it went into new vent foam, heater core filters, now its a leaky rack and pinion and remounting heater fan motors. Somewhere did I notice a ferrparts bag in your pix? If so small world. I went over to tower st. to pick up some of my parts.

Are you here in the Sacramento area??

Yeah, I'm over at FerrParts once a week or so. If not for parts, just to harass Keegan. If I don't have anything to harass Keegan over, I just do it for Dave Helms and Murray Glegg. And once in a while I feel guilty and buy him lunch...

Kegan... he is behind the back wall. Hell, he is the reason back walls exist.

Rick.... a True Team Player, thanks for what you do. I have a 'Special' photo of what one can expect to see if the nerve is mustered up to peak behind that wall...

When I was behind what I thought was the back wall was a 308 being dismanteled

    Great advice I should listen.

Studs on the bottom of case to short and tight against case, cannot remove them.

Two options leave the seal alone or make a puller. The 2cd really sounds like I can screw something up big time. Out of the 3 seals I just know one of them were sipping fluid.
Well going to put it back together, check in twenty.

Ferrparts are also checking to see if they have a blind puller for rent, i will check around here to see if anybody even knows what one is.

I know you said you talked to John Y. Did you talk about this? He just had some studs removed and remade. So someone nearby knows how to yank those. Blind bearing puller... I have one.

Nicely put!! and oh sooooo true.

Oh Jeezus, don't post the Elmer and WonderDon pictures here. It'll be really hard to keep selling Keegan as THE BEST Ferrari parts guy on the planet if you post that. But, somehow I image that as wallpaper on Niki's computer.

    Thanks for well wishes, Tom!!

The best thing that has come of this is that with all the CTs and MRIs I've had done, I now have empirical proof that I actually do have a brain (albeit damaged).... which was contrary to the belief of many friends and family before the injury!!!
