Between my pics and that video, I think you have it.

The only thing I wouldn't do is use the vice-grips on the steering links. I separated the tie rod ends from the control arm on the upright. Then you can use appropriate tools on the jamb nut and tie rod end then just spin then end off. Also give you a chance to check for wear and play on the tie rod ends.

If you want to come up and borrow my bearing puller, just let me know. I can walk you through the pics.

Mike's got you covered on the rack! As far as the puller, as soon as you look at it you will get it. Bust the cage out with a screwdriver and push the balls together allowing room for each leg 180 degrees apart. The puller has balls on the business end with flats that allow it to be inserted between the inner and outer race where upon you turn them 90 degress to act as a full ball now just tighten and out she comes! It really is easy! Tom
PS REALLY be careful when you punch the old seal case !!!!! it is very easy to nick the shaft------------ if you nick the shaft DO NOT hope it will seal. It takes minutes to do it right and hours to make a sleeve if you screw the shaft up. TAKE YOUR TIME

Got it Mike sounds more reasonable now.

Just got to find one. Probably going to visit Rick on the puller.

More Rack questions. Found my leak, coming out the pinon seal. Blew air around the pinion shaft to clean the solvent residual and low and behold my rack boots inflated like a balloon. haha
Rick I all ready popped the tie rod ends off at the arms, I had that tool for my 62 chevy 409.
Are there seals at each end of the rack to hold the oil from going into the boot?

Rick Ever heard of Straight Line Steering in Sacramento?

    Have you ever used them?
Just checked with a steering shop in San Jose. Yes there are 3 seals one pinion and two one on each end of the rack to hold the oil in the hsg.

Next question, has any body ever replaced the two end hsg. seals?

    thanks again bob

Only if they cook it first... Guess I'm like Terry Bradshaw on that stuff.
But don't let that stop you from coming up!!

you can borrow the pin wrenches for the steering rack too if you want...

No end seals on any of the racks I've rebuilt... For those that know Panteras, they use the same rack as the 308s. So you can get all the seals and the bronze bushing kits from any competent Pantera shop. I'd suggest Panteras by Wilkinson or Dennis Quella's Pantera Performance (Side note, he's one of the best and is the same part of the country as Dave Helms... must be something in the water up there). I've helped Mike Drew rebuild a couple of dozen steering racks over the last 15 years. For those from the Pantera world, you know who he is.

There is or was a prescribed amount of oil that should go into these racks. Basically it was setup to just slosh back and forth and the boots contained it. Once you get the rack rebuilt and back in the car you jack up the driver's side of the car, remove the inner boot clamp and pour in the oil. When I went to rebuild mine I spent a few weeks tracking down someone, anyone who worked for CamGears (nee TRW) who worked on these things. Well, I found someone (via his resume online) and through him I have the email from one of the CamGears engineers who said after many years they found that the oil slosh was NOT the best solution and he said the official lubrication on the final years of this rack style was a generous amount of ZERO weight grease. Hard to find, but its out there.

Heard of them but never used them.

End seals...news to me, the seals I've seen are all on the pinion housing, two flat gasket seals and a lip seal on the pinion shaft where it exits the housing. There is also an 0-ring but its internal and doesn't really used as a "leak seal".

I'll go out on a limb here and say no, because on the 25+ I've rebuilt (20+ Pantera, 5+ 308) I've never seen any end housing seals to replace... just the accordion boots.

Follow my pics on the rack tear down and rebuild. Sorry guys, I got the poly-urethane mounts from Keegan and his sources have dried up. Late last year I needed 2 more and he was able to con one of our valued Masters here on the list to cough up two from his stock for me.

Rick Your probably right about the end seals, the technician has to call Michigan to find out about it for me,since he just r&r the racks.
If that is the case the rack had no problems other than leaking. I saw the oring inside, other plate had gasket, and I can order the seal from my auto store, I have the boots from ferrparts on the shelf. I will look at your pix, I will get back to you.

    Thanks
    bob

    Nice pix.
I noticed the seal size on your replacement 14-22-4 is diff. from the one I have 14.28-22.03-3.9 , which one should I get?
The o ring, what size should I order?
The Gray grease was that the 0 weight grease that you used?
On your mount bushings any ideas? Only one of the bushing broke down like yours, must be a common problem.
In one of your pix did I see a lath in the shop?

While you have the rack out... Take a VERY CLOSE look at the bushing in the passenger side of the rack. See if you have any slop in the rack as it exits the passenger side of the housing. Its common for the stock bushings (plastic with metal housing) to get pulverized with time. The best solution is the sintered bronze bushing.

not sure of the size on the 0-ring, I just got one like for like

    Yes on the gray grease

    good eye on the lathe

Rick What do you think about the seal sizes? Which size will work the best?

    Rack mounting bushings, any thoughts?

seal sizes... what I got worked so that's all I have to go on. Had it not fit, I would have gone looking for specs. I'd call Keegan. He has size specs on most seals and bearings in his database (a work of art). Or, take your pinion shaft out and take it with you to FerrParts. Or, call one of the Pantera shops I spoke of and have them send you the "kit" with the bronze bushing.

Rack Mount Bushings... as I said, I don't think anyone has the red poly bushings - which is a shame. (come on TED, get some more!!!) But, the stock bushings work fine. A new stock bushing is going to be better than those pink things that turn into mush. Elsewhere on the car (A/C mounts) there are similar bushings of a slightly better (higher) durometer if you want to try for something a bit stiffer. I've seen those in both grey and black so they are easy to tell from the pink ones on the rack.

Nope, didn't keep any of the old stuff. But, they are breaking a 308 at FerrParts so I know there are 8 used ones for sure....
