I had assumed the 308 and 328 GTS had no rollover protection however I was reading about the demise (temporary) of convertibles in the 70's due to rollover regs. Without a roll cage, do these cars offer any substantive protection?

its not going to matter if you end up in a roll over in a 3x8,,because you will be dead,,,im not sure how one would end up rolling one of these cars over...if thats the case,,the driver should never have been in the car anyhow (due to driver error) im not sure,,,unless of course you got broadsided by a armoured car,,upon entering a corner at high speed,,these cars will have mild to massive understeer..(plowing effect) then on to mild to massive oversteer,,so needless to say,,,slower corner entrance,,fast corner exit,,,if you screw up,,,your going to plow straight ahead and crash,,or lose the ass end and either spin out,,or like on a motorcycle ( high side ).the front end will snap back,,and you will plow straight away., again .,and crash,,but i dont see how the car would flip over,,im no expert,,thats just my opinion..based on many years of driving my 328 at the limit on the street...and of course a little rambling,,lol....Brett

If you are worried about the GTS than you should be even more worried about the GTB.

The roof of a gtb is only sheet and some very minor tubing. Actually i would put more trust in the GTS

You are protected from a rollover, especially if you don't.

That is not necessarially the case, and the OP has a good question. There are several scenarios that could involve a roll over not caused by death inducing circumstances, such as sliding down a steep shoulder, dropping a wheel off the edge of a road, or like Balboni in a Countach in 1985 having to ditch one to aviod a truck that did not see him. These cars are invisible to most all drivers, you have to be like a motorcyclist to survive out there.
I've seen a car roll over in what seemed like slow motion after being forced to the median and then was launched by one of those guard rails that slopes into the ground. Made a nice Joey Chitwood ramp for a car running about 40 mph, and over it went. I climbed in the windows and got the kids out of the child seats who were hanging upside down.

It would be nice to know if a 308 would survive this type of crash. Frankly, I'm more worried about a fire if one goes over, but every crash is different.

Are you talking specifically about the fuel cutoff or such?

The 3x8 has rollover protection - at least US cars do. They had to meet the rollover protection required for the model year - just like every other car sold in the US did. The standards changed periodically but there were requirements from 1971 onward in the US motor vehicle standards. Ferrari had to meet them to sell the cars in the US. It's hard to imagine that US/non-US cars would have been constructed differently in this regard but perhaps they were.

(As per: Subpart B - Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards
§571.208 Standard No. 208; Occupant crash protection.)

Any car can roll over. Some offer better protection than others. Anybody that is really concerned about it should not drive vintage cars. Safety features have come a long way in the last 30 some years. Get a newer car.

ive seen a number of Ferraris crashed in the santa monica mountains of los angeles,,over the years...including the idiot in the stolen Enzo a few years ago...non were flipped over,,,just crashes due to a driver having absolutely no business being behind the wheel ,,and trying to drive quick...but the other poster did talk about sliding down a hill,,trying to avoid a colision with a vehicle that couldnt see,,and crossed the path unknowingly...

Thanks all. Was wondering about roof protection, car should have a fuel cutoff (although not like a race car ). I have owned mine for 12 years and really do not worry about flipping it but as curious if there was any real protection because as several posters pointed out, stuff can happen. As for skill, I do not track the 328 because I see no need to torture it that way, however I have probably logged north of 100 hours on the track (about 50 tires).

Tip over switch in the fuel pump circuit was added to the 308 sometime late in the 70s, IIRC.....

The microswitch in the driver's seat of early cars serves much the same function, you azz won't be pressing on it, if you are upside down.

Hey Brett, can you please tell us more about the years of driving your 328 at it's limit on the streets? Care to tell us more? I'm sure that was a hoot and you call me a jerk off. I've put over 30,000 miles on my 308 GTS QV how many miles have you logged on your 328?

since you asked,,i can answer that sir,,,,68,000 miles in 12 years in the 328 90% in the twisties. 200,000 + miles in a street / track RX7...150,000 + miles on 10 motorcycles..both in CT and CA.(20 + years riding )..5 first place trophies 3 2nd place and a few third place .,racing motorcycles in southern california,,WSMC.(willow springs and other so cal tracks..)..CMRRA(,,YSR and Mini NSR s,,,),,,i currently own 2 KAWASAKI ZL S 1000 /900 and a yamaha maxim x.... on which i smoke the sportbike riders in the palos verdes canyons by my house on the weekends,!! lol i also have a 2000 Suzuki GSXR 1300.Hyabusa.which i ride on the street and the canyons,,,my top speed in death valley was 187 MPH,,170 MPH on a ZX9R,.. the BusaBoys of southern california regularly ride together in los angeles,,shifting through the gearbox on wheelies., 100 foot burnouts..and ripping down open stretches of freeway at 165+ mph 3 across...our marks are all over los angeles county. Im self taught on two wheels and on four....ive been in numorous 2 wheel slides on all my motorcycles in the dry and the wet on the street,,,i can shift through 4 gears on one wheel on the busa,,,and i have controlled many 4 wheel slides in the Ferrari...i bought my Ferrari so i can experience ...even if its just a tiny bit...what it must be like to be an F1 driver,,,and i figured out how to do that without ever crashing my car...i have spun out three times in 12 years...once in oil on a freeway ramp,,and once on old tires,,,,and once out in the canyons of san diego county between 2 18th century stone walls..and managed to keep the car from hitting either one....that was luck...i moved to california so i can ride motorcycles and drive cars all year long,,and ive been at it out here for 25 years...and i couldnt have survived without the Great Gig in the sky watching over me,,,and God willing,,ill get my Twin Turbo Porsche in the next 2 years...thats been my second dream car since the F1 [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aJhGeoHO4Gk[/ame] [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YoGWHKJEuaw[/ame] ray louie and brett
