    I heard about this a bit, and something is still not sitting right with turbos for me. Keep the engine formula at 2.4L and use naturally aspirated V6 yet raise the rpm limit to 20k and keep the use of KERS in there as it adds a nice flavor to the outcome of races (reliability of the unit etc).

    I have to wonder if Ferrari would start building a Dino again with a similar road-based version of the F1 unit.......Or, if the new F1 Dino motor would be the base for the Enzo replacement and Luca would simply call the Enzo's successor, "Dino". Using an F1 motor in their Halo car brings back memories of the F50.

    Yup. Give them a displacement limit, and limit the amount of fuel allowed for the race and let the teams figure out the rest.

    I think I know what you mean and I tend to agree, set a displacement limit and let the dog's run free of collar and chain. There are other area's in which the FIA can attempt a balanced playing field. I wanna see some daym ingenuity back in the engine dept!!!

    If we're going down this (fantasy!) path, why limit displacement?

    Give 'em X amount of fuel for the race and that's it! - If you reckon you can build a V16-twin-turbo that'll go the distance, have at it.....

    However, two main problems then tend to arise;

    - The races become economy runs
    - The cost spirals *completely* out of control, and the sport eventually dies.

    As long as the rev limit is high enough to keep the characteristic f1 scream, I couldn't care less how big or small the engines are. It's all about the show!

    Rule change rule change rule change ... change the rule that rule changes.

    V4, in line 4, V8, V6, DRS, KERS, TRS, turbo, no turbo.... keep at it FIA... this sport is headed down the tubes with rule changes!

    12k RPM limit, BUT with compound turbos we will see gigantic power. Very possible 04 lvls.

    I suspect that within 3 years of this new formula, the engines will be so powerful that the whole formula will be scrapped. 1.6 L V6 Turbos with close to 1000 HP are possible within 12K RPM limits. It seems that every time the engines encroach on/above 900 HP the poers that be decide to downgrade the powerplants.

    Right now, the 2.4 Litre V8s (with 18K rev limits) have made no real progress in power over the 3.0 L V10s; and that is 300 HP/litre. The current engines are making 720-735 HP with 80 HP from KERS for a few seconds per lap.

    My formula: Keep the 2.4 litre V8s and remove the rev limits and common ECU, but mandate only 3 engines per season. Blow all three up and sit on the sidelines till next year.

    No one would be racing past half season then!

    I agree the 1.6L V6 formula will see huge power. They will have to place a psi boost cap in place because compound turbos would cause these things to break the sound barrier.

    Why couldn't there just be a horsepower cap (say 800 hp) and a maximum (generous) fuel tank size with no refueling?

    Make the engine whatever you want and dyno all the points positions after the race.

    If you want to make a 4.0L V12 that weighs a ton and sucks gas...go ahead.
    If you want a 2.0L Supercharged V6 that revs to the moon go ahead.
    If you want a 1.5L turbo I-4 that is lightweight and fuel efficient go ahead.

    Agreed. Although the postponement of these new engines another year and the fact that they are going to be V6 powered rather than 4 bangers is the best news I've heard all day. I dig the FIAs new mode of compromising and working with the teams.

    Give them a specified quantity of gasoline for each race... say 50 gallons. Go figure it out boys...

    Agreed, I know the V10's aren't coming back, but if we have to lose the V8's a boosted V6 is much better then a boosted I4.
