85 QV euro friends car, took a drive to a car show, no problem. Left car show drove a few miles, car backfires and dies. Wont start, check out ignition, no spark, ( pulled plug wire and attached spare spark plug from tool kit, no spark .
Call AAA, waiting 30 mins. Figure give car a try. Starts so instead of waiting on side of highway take off again, drive a good 20 mins, highway no stops , car dies again, same story push car off road, let sit 20 mins. , it restarts
bring car to my house ( closer) car is idling in driveway , then stalls. Any thoughts, prior posts that might help , I checked all the fuse's, wires, plug wires, coil wires, ignition switch wires ( as in wiggled ) Thanks

Maybe sounds like a hot start issue. Plenty to search on the boards.

I'd check the (3) crank sensors. Disconnect the plugs & put a meter across them - you are looking for a resistance number of somewhere in the 600-1000 ohm range. If you get an open circuit on one of them then that's not going to work.

Thanks Iain, That was the problem the rear most sensor (Engine speed Pickup 136) was the one, no ohm's when hot 781 ohms when cold. As soon as the car would get warm the sensor would drop off and the car would die. Now if it was the 1/4 or the 5/8 I think the car would continue running but rough I would guess. FChat rules, saved me a lot of time chasing.

    Cool .

I think they are the same sensors as on the 328. I don't know about in the States but over here Superformance sell them (as do Ferrari) for around $55 equivalent each.

Just a thought here, but before doing anything else, check all of your ground connections. I had a similar problem with a Mondial QV that I had a number of years back, and most of the electrical problems, including ignition problems, all ended up being caused by a really badly corroded negative cable that was running to a really badly corroded cut-off switch up front near the battery. I got a new negative cable, cleaned up the battery terminals, wired the battery directly to the chassis, bypassing the cutoff switch, and voila, most of my nagging electrical problems were solved.

Don't just check the grounding at the battery. Make sure that the grounds on your ECUs are in good condition also. I seem to recall on the QVs that there is a known problem with the grounds there as well.

    Hope that helps.

    Iain was spot on

yub...car would run on either one of the two tdc sensors (with half the power), but engine would die with a faulty rpm sensor since there is no signal to the ecu...this is valid for a 308

on a 328 (which has only one tdc and one rmp sensor) engine stops if either sensor failed
