The inspection at HR Owen revealed play in the n/s track rod end. It's a very easy job to swap them out so I tackled it sooner rather than leave it for later.

First off I took some reference measurements so the new one would go back in roughly the same place. I will take it to have the toe set properly at a later date but I wanted it to be as good as possible for the journey there.

I started by loosening the lock nut against the track rod end - the rod itself has 13mm flanks and the lock nut is 22mm. Next was to undo the bolt holding the end in the hub - 10mm hex. It's very tight and needed my longest breaker bar.

But it came out - now the end is ready to be unscrewed from the rod.

The old and new parts - the old one was worn enough for me to feel the play by hand. The rubber boot was also perished. The part is made by NMB if anyone wanted to try and cross ref it to get it cheaper.

Bolted back up - to help with future adjustment, I put a little copper grease on the threads on the end of the rod (not the bolt at the hub). Also the tightening torque for the bolt at the hub is 65Nm.

As I mentioned above, I'll take the car to get the toe set later. As it happens there is a garage with a Hunter machine about 2 miles away from where I live.

It's been a while since I last updated and not much has been done to the car. I did however turn my attention to the cleanliness of the car. I took the car over to a friend of mine, Huw, who lives in South Wales and runs MP Valeting. I've known Huw for a number of years and his attention to detail rivals mine.

As you can see the car was a little mucky before we started....

Then it was up with the lights to inspect the paintwork.

As you would expect from a car that was recently painted, there were very few swirls. We did detect a very fine scratch on the o/s rear wing but I couldn't get the camera to pick it up.

So it was on with the machine polishing.

We used 3M Ultrafina SE on a polishing pad on the majority of the panels but did need to use a cutting pad with 3M Fast Cut for the small scratch.

The machine polishing didn't take long as the car is covered with Paintshield from the front all the way to (and including) the doors. Next up was Dodo Juice Lime Prime which was applied with the machine all over the car. I've never used Lime Prime before but was astonished at how good it was, especially on the film.

Two coats of Dodo Juice Diamond White wax followed.

And here's the fully corrected and waxed paint. The picture really doesn't do it justice - the pearl looks amazing.

We tackled the interior next. The sufaces were first cleaned with interior spray cleaner. The silver aluminium trims were quite marked - a tip I read about was to use a magic eraser on them. I can report that it works very well.

There was dirt embedded everywhere but it didn't escape our attention!

The carpets were vacuumed and a few dirty spots on the mats were cleaned with carpet shampoo. The sills were polished up.

This is the state of my engine bay at the moment....

    Image Unavailable, Please Login

And this is the main reason why - the air box was is a real state. On closer inspection it seems that someone had sprayed it (in the wrong shade of) silver whilst it was on the car!!! The covers were in a bit of a state too.

Needless to say this is not acceptable to me so off it all came. I have sent it all away to be professionally painted.

With the engine bay so open it was a great time to do some checks. First off was the gearbox mount - as this is a common failure, I was prepared to have to change it now but it appears in good condition. I don't have a record of it being changed but suspect it was done when the clutch was changed in preperation for sale to Neil by Joe Macari.

I also checked the engine mounts and these too look OK.
