I am bringing my 15 y.o. son to school in Roswell, NM on August 3rd, and he wants to make a trip of it. He is a diehard Cowboys fan, but as we know, there is nothing going on there.

I wish we could have seen a team scrimmage or something, but billions of dollars says that fans like us don't deserve that.

So any alternatives? Even including a private guided (off season) deer hunt? We would like to fly in to Lubbock, or even Austin, and have fun for 2-3 days. A hunt may be too ambitious, but any ideas before I say goodbye for a semester would be very much appreciated.

My kid is into sports, pretty much that's it. And football is more important than all other sports combined, with Cowboys being a big deal. We would fly in and drive westward to Roswell.

    Thanks, Jay

You can still tour the stadium, go down on the field, see the locker rooms. It's a very impressive place, even without a game going. I went there to see a soccer game, just so I could see the stadium before football season started.

Make sure you tell the Roswell locals that it was just a weather balloon. They like that.

If training camp happens, it may be in San Antonio. All depends on aloy of variables, but it may work out. I heard on the radio that they put a $$$ deposit down on the Alamodome, despite the uncertainty.

I would head out to Ruidoso, NM. About 100 miles west of Roswell. Nice little mountain town at 7500' elevation. Nice and cool in the summer. Beautiful place and quite a bit to do.

It is called the Permian Basin Petroleum Museum. Mr. Beal, whom most on here know of was the money investor when Jim Hall fielded the Pennzoil Indy Car team. Check out the Commemorative Air Force National Headquarters at MAF (Midland/Odessa Airport). This was formerly the Confederate Air Force. Neat place to visit also.......

Funny thing, a buddy of mine sent me this today. What a great place to hold a private party.

    Jay,

Hey I have a 15 year old and thinking of doing a trip out there too. Let me know if you would like to coordinate the trip together.

I used to live in El Paso and I went to NMMI in Roswell so I know the area well.

In either case, here are some places and things to consider:

    - New Mexico Military Institute, in Roswell. Where Roger Staubach went to school plus a lot of other famous people.
    - Carlsbad Caverns, Just south of Roswell. Great place to go! I must.
    - Sitting Bull Falls, Just south of Roswell. Great rock climbing and cool water fall.
    - Ft Davis in Ft Davis Texas. Just south of I-10. Great road that goes past McDonald observatory, another great spot to go to. Ft Davis was an old cavalry fort that is great to tour and see the old buildings or what’s left. Prude Ranch is a dude ranch where you can go out riding. It’s a great little town. I drove my 355 down that road and had a blast!

These are some initial thoughts. Let me know if you want company.

Maybe we can even get Jimpo to join us with his kids.

By the way are we taking the “cars”?

    Nick

So many things to do, so little time! I wouldn't drive my car to West Texas in Summer if my life depended on it. The 'mouse farting over an ice cube' just doesn't cut this heat. The daily might be fun though. Wish I could.

Well, actually, my son is starting at NMMI as a matter of fact. We are flying in with a bunch of baggage, and renting a car from Lubbock or Austin (pretty much need to buy plane tickets today) so no Ferrari drives.

We will just be cruisin around. The last time we flew into Albuquerque, and just wanted to try something different this time.

Ferrari content: I have busted my butt working on the entire A/C system, this proof of 47 degree air blowing out of the vents on a 95 degree day.

If you start in Austin, I'll recommend a handful of detours and BBQ joints to visit along the way. But then, there's a long stretch between here and Lubbock. FarmerDave is somewhere in between.

I agree with Ruidoso NM. We are friends with a family that owns a winter skiing ranch and during the summer makes it a hunting ranch. Beautiful places. Also, about two years ago I took a trip with two friends to go camping in the North Truchas in the Sangre De Cristo mountains. It is gorgeous land and very peaceful, especially if you go in past the tourists, about 13 miles or so. If you decide to go to the Truchas/Sangre De Cristo mountains, come in from the South. The North/NorthWest way is an incredibly long hike up and down mountain sides.

On the way up to the summit of N. Truchas, there is a lake on top of a mountain with a sharp peak behind it. I'll find the photo tonight and share it. Great place and would love to go back.

Right now high water is extremely unlikely and hell is already here based on the temps.

Seriously though have fun on your road trip with your son. Maybe head to Cloudcroft or Ruidoso. Make sure your rent car's A/C works well before you leave the lot.

Glad to hear about a new recruit. My NMMI number was 935046 lots of memories there. Carlsbad carverns are a must see although at 15 who cares haha. Not much in Roswell other than the school and a titan missle silo for sale, great place to store cars 25K sq ft burried in the desert. NMMI has a great history and is a great school and a great start for the real world. Best of luck to your son.
