Got myself into a pickle working on the Harley. Have found lots of great advice on f-chat so thought I would take a shot posting here. The main oil seal looks very much like a wheel seal for those familiar with repacking wheel bearings. The reason I suspect it was leaking was due to an extraordinary amount of engine oil coming out of the primary.

The problem is after 130,000 miles and 22 years the seal came off in pieces except of course for the main part of it that is fused to the surrounding metal. Seems like the only way out of this mess now is to dissolve it. Is there a chemical or readily available product that will do it?

    No sorry.
I don't know of any chemical that will eat Buna Rubber.
Your gonna have to, somehow, scrape it off.

Okay, ignore this please. The face and shoulder of this seal is metal. Once I got the seal puller on the thing it came right off.

    Thanks.

Glad you got it sorted. I was going to suggest that you look at the new seal to see how the old one was constructed :)
