Wanted: 246 GT

It seems that there are much more GTS's on the market vs GT coupes at any one time the last 5 years or more. Great GTS's sell at good prices. There isn't enough data on great GT coupes to establish values. In the last 5 years only a handful(if not less) of great coupes have been on the market in America. I like GTS's for many reasons mentioned. The GT coupe I love. It is an emotionally perfect design statement. If there were two equivilent Dinos for sale, a coupe and a GTS. Both perfect Platinum restored, great original color combos, all books, tools and history. I believe the value would be the same but more buyers bidding on the coupe.

The first Dino I seriously looked at was a GTS in southern California. I loved its looks and especially the open air feeling (I'm not a convertible type, but loved the open air feeling of Corvette coupes with removable t-tops).

The second Dino I pursued, the one I own, was a GT I also found in southern California. To me the GTS looks more modern, the GT more classic. Not sure that makes sense, but I'm happy with my choice (since I can't afford to own one of each!).

As the owner of two GTs, I'm obviously biased, but here goes: the GT wins by a mile! You can get the open-air feeling in any number of current or older convertibles. First, the GTS is a targa and, as such, not fully "open-air." Second, the body structure suffers severely. I have seen GTS Dinos with large paint cracks around the outer base of the rear buttresses. I once drove a GTS with the roof on, and watched the targa top do a dance with the windshield header. I was also once a passenger in a GTS with the top off: only a 50-mph parade lap on a glass-smooth Lime Rock track. The windshield visibly moved from side to side. I shudder (no pun intended!) to think what the experience would be like at speed on a rough road. Finally, I don't think it can be credibly argued that the lines of the GTS roof improve upon the looks of the GT, with its achingly beautiful combination of curved rear window, lovely quarter windows which give a clear view through the car, and of course the arc of the roof itself. That said, again, I am terminally prejudiced in favor of the GT, so please, no scorn from GTS lovers! I love them too, just not as much as the GT! Fred

 

When I drove my GTS regularly I don't remember it being the nightmare you describe. I have read about scuttle shake and squeaky targa tops but didn't witness any on mine. With seals in good shape my targa top seems pretty solid on the highway. I tried to keep my scorn to a minimum!

 

The one and only GTS I've ever driven (before I bought my GT) had the so-called "dashboard scuttle" big time- a high frequency but very visible shake of the entire dash assembly at speeds 50+ or so. I assume and hope, for GTS owner's sakes, that they all don't have this disgusting trait. In any case, I agree with others r/e the very clean, classic look of the GT.
