Ah, Michelle Mouton. One of the fastest ladies in the WORLD! :D

That's who I had a crush on in high school, when she was driving a Fiat 131 Mirafiori (and so was I, just a lot less power... ;))

OMG! Took me a second, but then I realized she was talking and giving the interview WHILE ON THE RECCE!

The dude in the passenger seat is not sure whether to open his eyes wider or close them.

Thanks SO much, Seth! She was AWESOME then and she's awesome now.

"When I started rallying in 1973, all the top drivers said I didn't know anything because I had not driven the Moroccan Rally, so when they brought it back and I got to drive this Porsche, I had to try it. The key word is to enjoy..."

She BEAT Rohrl, Blomqvist, Waldegaard, all those guys, 2nd in the WRC in 1982. Wow.

Makes Danica look like a swim suit model... :D

brilliant - Rally seems like the ultimate. Unprdictable surface and terrain, unforgiving "runoff," high speeds and only one crack at each turn. I'd love to try it

I'm kind of slow on the uptake so bear with me...

Are you saying match the rev's while the clutch is engaged?

BTW, the turn in question is not a nice gradual turn that starts with a nice smooth transition. It's a 90 deg turn. Think of a 90 deg. left hand turn at the end of a long straight, going downhill.

yeah. blip as you downshift release clutch.
i wouldnt worry too much about it though heel and toe is on its way to being in the same category as knowing how to use a buggy whip.

Believe it or not I feel the most comfortable when wearing a nice broken in pair of loafers.. My techniq is a tad different.. The width of my foot allows me to blip the throttle with the outer edge of my foot while keeping (if necessary) the left side of my foot on the brake pedal as well.. It is very comfortable for me and probably unorthodox.. It is a very fluid transition for me.. Sometimes conventional heal toe looks very uncomfortable and abrupt. Here is some photos..

    1. On the gas
    2. Braking while blipping the throttle to rev. match
    3. Full brake
    4. Back to brake and rev match..

Fergit the loafers and git the white socks. It's all in the socks.

One of the first evaluations I work on with drivers is to measure the consistency of their deceleration rate while effecting the downshift(s) through a longer braking zone with data.

If there are areas in the distance between where braking starts and ends where the decel rate (in g's) ebbs, I ask them to be particularly mindful of inadvertently releasing some pressure from the brake pedal as they blip.

Once you've seen it occur on the data, it's very clear and can be fixed right away.

Usually, drivers are too slow with their blips and exaggerate the rocking motion, hence are not maintaining pressure on the brake pedal throughout the brake zone.

Braking is ALWAYS most important. Although still important, the downshift smoothness is secondary to getting the car slowed down for the next corner.

I try and remind drivers at every opportunity that the purpose of the downshift(s) is only to select the proper gear for passage through and out of the next corner...

Thanks for the info coach and everyone else. The pictures are great.

Yes, I am not downshifting to slow down, I am downshifting because I have slowed down.

I will work on my technique and pick up some nice socks.

Opinions will vary, of course. But I have found that fear works wonderfully well in this regard. Simply avoid getting on the brakes until you are having a near death experience is a great motivator for staying on the brakes until your eyeballs start returning to something approaching twice normal size. :)

Sorry to resurrect an old thread - I am trying to work this out as well. My feet tend to point outward, so Mr. Chairman's technique also is more comfortable for me. is there any inherent disadvantage to this vs. "conventional" heel and toe??

    Thx

Here's a video of my technique.. it's a little weird but works for me. I use the more traditional technique sometimes depending on the car and pedal alignment. I feel my "weird" technique gives me better control of the brakes and in the cars I've spent most of my time racing, they require a lot of force on the brake pedal (no power assist, no abs).

As others have said, it's important to keep your brake pressure consistent and affected as little as possible by the movement to blip. Here's a throttle/brake trace image I made for a friend of mine from all the braking zones during my personal best lap at a local track while testing:

Most importantly of all, you just need to be comfortable and be able to do it without thinking about it. If you can do that, it doesn't matter what it looks like.. :)

So you submit that race drivers drive out of control and just "hope" that things work out and that's why they have to pray?

If you are entering every corner just praying/hoping you are going to make it, you are not racing, you are driving beyond your skill set...
