I am really bummed out that I just got a speeding ticket in my F355 Spider. I was taking my girlfriend out for a pleasure drive, top down (the car, not her), admiring the spectacular sunset over the mountains, and a rainbow to our left and a little behind us. It has rained the last 9 nights here and it finally stopped. I know because I've been wanting to drive my car so bad. Tonight, I WAS NOT driving fast or aggressively at all. Just cruising in 6th gear. The speed limit suddenly changed from 55 to 45 and I did not notice. I was keeping up with traffic, not passing anyone. I get pulled over by a very nice officer who clocked my at 58 in the 45. He gave me a ticket. The part that really gets me is that, this kind of thing happens to me far too often. I have several tickets this year all similar bull ****. I am not a maniac driver. I am very careful. I am getting close to the number of points to where I could loose my license with like one more ticket this year. I don't even want to drive my sports cars anymore. I feel like a target. I am feeling really down right now because I don't even know what the point of having a sports car is anymore. All the fun is being taken away by my own government trying to raise money with speed traps. For me its not the money. I can easily afford the fine, heck I can even afford higher car insurance. Its the fact that one more little incident and I will loose my driving privileges. I do go for spirited drives on secluded roads on occasion, and I have never gotten a ticket while driving like an *******. I only get tickets trying to obey the law. WTF!

I am an experienced track driver and really know how to drive a high performance car. I NEVER drive even close to the limit on the street. I drive with both hands on the wheel. I drive with the radio off. No cell phone. No text messaging. No DVD player. No navigation system. I hardly ever drink alcohol let alone on a night I am taking a drive. I was by far the most in control, safest driver on that street tonight. I was aware of the car behind me, to my right, and in front. I left an overly large gap between me and the car in front of me, to protect my beautiful Ferrari from rock chips. I am just steaming about how unfair this feels. Its stupid.

Thanks, I needed to rant a little.

    I feel your pain.

I got a ticket for 5 MPH over the speed limit in Vegas (45 in a 40) in my F430. It sucks.

They've destroyed my enjoyment of driving. All I can suggest is getting a lawyer. A local one will probably get you out of it.

My Valentine V1 has saved more times than I can count. It might be a good investment to get some type of radar detector going forward. I prefer the V1 due to the arrows but there are lots of good choices out there.

Sorry to hear about your trouble.

What an idiot of a COP. You don't pull over a Ferrari //@@. You try to keep up with it and admire it. No offence to my law enforcement members in the chat room of course. You know what I am talking about.

I'm not a maniac driver, I just drive a lot (about 75,000 miles a year). Normally speeding 10-20mph above on the interstate.

In the last 3 years I have received 2 tickets and 17 warnings. I'm 100% honest, cool, calm. Maybe it's just the police around here, but most people I know get tickets arguing or being rude, I could also just be lucky.

My concrete advice would be to

(1)Hire a traffic lawyer, get everything thrown out.

(2)Invest in a quality radar detector like Valentine V1.

    (3) Find some areas that are not populated by police to really enjoy your 355.

    (4) Look into some local auto cross and road racing events to get it out of your system if all else fails.

Don't sweat it though, there's always somebody trying to ruin your Ferrari ownership. IRS wants to know how you bought it, Home Owners Association says the car is too loud, police tickets you, friends want to borrow money after they see it, etc ,etc.

Just try to enjoy it, other then that sorry about your bad streak and I hope things get better.

In 4 years I have no speeding tickets in my 355 Spider! The key is a good radar detector and a good lawyer. You can challenge that the radar gun had not been calibrated properly to create a window of doubt. You will win unless the cop has proof that his radar gun has been calibrated properly and recently. Won't hurt to try. Good luck!

When i picked up my spider and drove it home from Oregon, I got to a small town in Northern California, pulled in for a gas up. As I am putting gasoline in my car, a middle age couple walked up and commented "what a beautiful spider" (with its road grime and all). So, to return the favor, as I am pulling away from the gas station to the on ramp, I treated the couple to the full sound of the Tubi exhaust at 7000 RPM. Wouldn't you know it, the CHP office is just up the road. Exactly one mile down the freeway, a CHP marked car slowly pulled up right behind me as I am now doing exactly 65 MPH. He tailed me for about 30 seconds, pulled out and passed me on the left and gave me a thurmb-up sign and sped off.

Not all cops are that bad! That was a lucky day.

I actually bought a cheap "helmet cam" from china that I have stuck to the window behind me when I drive my 360. It films the speedo, the front windshield and my right shoulder. Cost me like 30 bucks on ebay.. that way I have taped evidence that I was doing the speed of traffic and obeying all laws. I have left it at home on occasion as well.. ;-)

Curt: exactly, that is the way to go, make sure you have footage as a counterargument.
This will help tremendously should you ever be in an accident as well. I had an accident 10 years ago where the counterparty ran a red light but still got the upper hand because there were no witnesses.
And of course the psychology of people leading to think that a Ferrari is a toy rather than a car, and in an accident with it your speed will by default be considered a contributor to the accident. Even if you were standing still :).

Thanks for all the support. I am going to lawyer up on this one. I am also going to get a Valentine One.

When the cop put his lights on behind me, he was in an unmarked car. I assumed he was stopping me because I had a temp tag, or because he wanted to see the car. I had NO IDEA I did anything wrong. I was extremely courteous, polite, honest, and explained my side in a non-defensive way. I thought he would let me go, I would have. It is what it is. I tossed and turned all night thinking about getting rid of my Ferrari and my Porsche. I still don't know... The whole point of the cars is that its an escape from reality. They change my mood when I get in them. Last night my mood was changed from good to bad. I'll get over it, my life is so blessed and so wonderful.

Perhaps we are now at the root of the problem.....

Perhaps if you bothered to read the signs as you drive past......

Perhaps as you read the signs as you drive past you might try to OBEY some of them....

Very careful and not reading the speed limit signs is contraindicative.

You ARE (A.R.E.) a target, everyone in a Ferrari IS (I.S.) a target. That is why one has to utilize special restraint while driving.

Don't let THE MAN get you down! ;-) It's a game.. a stupid little game. 99% of the driving population can barely keep their cars between the yellow and white lines. Just yesterday a woman was swerving 3 feet left and right as she had deciding driving 30 miles per hour in a residental area is a great time to clean the front seats of lint. An ATT repair guy swerved over the yellow line 3-4 feet this last week and killed a bicycle driver. (was charged with improper lane change)
All the while we can drive with absolute precision and control at triple the speed limit. Danger to others in this context is relative... and in these times it's as much about $$$ as it is about the actual basis and application of the law.

What really grinds my gears is that like 2 years ago, Iowa state patrol now requires you to get out of your car, walk to their car to sign for the ticket on a computer screen....in the ages of ipads they pull you out onto a dangerous highway shoulder (often at night) to walk to their car to sign a ticket. It is absurd, and defeats the whole purpose of using the cause of public safety to write speeding tickets.

But its getting better because now everyone is finding out that traffic cams can help you pay for all of your citys dept problems, so now most bigger citys in Iowa are getting them. So I guess now they wont even slow you down if you are speeding, instead they will do the safe thing and send you a speeding ticket a month later, which will you know, stop you from driving erratically the day that you were actually causing a public safety issue.

Its just another bs tax they have found to repackage under something so they can take money from us and say "oh your tax bracket is only X%, so its cheaper then it was back in the day". Man, you add up all the crap just to live today and your at/over 50% in taxes pretty quick.

sorry, its a real sticking point with me as I live in a small town around a craphole city with alot of drug violence and gang related trafficing and violence, and yet they always have police on traffic details on one of the beltways.

I got 2 tickets in 3 months, BOTH of them for 3 over! 53 in a 50, and 38 in a 35. If other cities are like Vegas, the cops are boosting the cities revenue by increasing the financial hardship of its citizens. I beat both tickets, but had to pay the fine on one... $610!!!

Cops here dont bother with the chitbox cars, most of those scumbags will never pay the fine... they go after cars driven by people they ASSUME can afford to pay tickets. Little do they realize that I now make about 35% of what I USED to make when I bought and paid cash for my car!

I suggest you fight it, and hope the cop doesn't show up to court, 70% of the time, they dont. If the cop DOES show up, and it looks bad for you, plead no-contest and tell the judge that you'll pay the fine if he/she waives the points.

Since he did catch you speeding, when your date comes up, go talk to the city attorney(s) be super courteous and they will give you a deal, probably to a lesser charge.

If you are a lawyer, as your name implies, use your resources to research your state's traffic code thoroughly. Otherwise, scour the web and spend some time getting to know the law. Ideas about the area, the officer, and the whole situation sometimes morph into the beginning of a good defense. Judges like to see creativity; it shows you took the system seriously enough to put in some effort doing research.

You mentioned the speed limit suddenly dropped. In PA, cops cannot use any electronic speed timing devices within 500 ft after a decrease in speed limit. I have used this defense, among others, with success in PA. If your state has a similar law, drive back to that area and take good pictures from all angles and familiarize yourself with landmarks and hiding places. Once in court, ask the arresting officer where he was parked as he spotted you. If it was within the illegal zone (as hopefully you could prove with your pictures) then the ticket gets thrown out.

Idea # 2: drive back to the area and determine if there was anything obscuring the 45MPH speed limit sign. Often trees grow over signs, hiding the fact that the rules just changed. Cops know this. If this is the case, take pictures from a vantage point that illustrates an attentive driver--focussing on the road--would not have seen that sign and therefore would have thought the limit was still 55.

Idea # 3: if the method of detection was radar, ask the officer to produce certification that the gun had been calibrated within the legal limits prior to its use to clock you AND ask for proof of training that the officer had been properly trained to use the radar gun.

    Again, get creative. Good luck.

    Oh.......nice car!!

It’s called “Racial Profiling”. The cops think any car as sleek and beautiful as a 355 must be a race car. And certainly anyone driving such a car must be a race driver. You are therefore pulled over entirely on the basis of race.

I believe that is the definition of Racial Profiling.
