Road America, July 16-17?

I haven't missed this event since 1986, keeps getting better every year.

Where does everyone watch the parade from? We are usually on the corner in front of Lake Street as they come into town, head over to 67 on the corner in front of Lincoln Street for the return trip.

 

Will be at the track and in town with my pop on Friday.
He's not ok riding in the 308 for more than about 30 minutes at a time so will be taking a comfy car up from Milwaukee.

He's 73, a huge sports car nut, first went to RA in the 70s.

Too bad we'll be going on different days Jeff, one of these days we've got to meet up!

 

Kurt, looks like I'm going to be there all 4 days. Track touring on Staurday and Sunday, hanging out the rest of the time.

You should bring your Ferrari to our Tuesday night car show in Mequon. It's every Tuesday night but August 9th we feature Italian cars. There's a thread about it in this section of the forum.

Hope to see you guys this weekend. If you see a 328 driving around like they are lost that will probably be me! Flag me down and say hi.

 

Can someone please explain to me what exactly goes on there? Their website isn't very informative.
Is it a track event? Race? Car show?
Is there a schedule of what and when?

It's a race event, or more specifically race(s). And each race is different from the next in that the cars racing are different. You will seen in one race ex-Formula One cars and in another race ex-Sports Cars from the 60s.

There are also two events in the Village of Elkhart Lake. On Friday the race cars which race at the event drive from the Road America track to the Village of Elkhart Lake and park on the street for everyone to see. It's quite a spectacle of sight and sound!

On Saturday night there is a Concours where Sports Cars line the streets of Elkhart Lake -- MGs, Porsches, Ferraris, Shelbys, Corvettes, etc. Very cool!

You can also drive your car on the track Friday, Saturday and Sunday in what is called "Touring".... generally this occurs around noon and lasts about an hour.

It's all the above and then some....

Vintage race cars from all over the country come together for this weekend to race competetively. The cars are classified and assigned to 'groups' that practice and qualify Thurs- Sat and then on Sunday the respective groups race wheel to wheel.
Origional shelby's, Le Mans, Can-AM, Trans AM... you name it and its probably going to be there. These are cars with real pedigree and history.

Besides the race cars that show up, theres the 'who's who' of vintage racing that appear and the types of cars that people bring up to this is amazing. Many vendors are set up selling almost whatever you can think of motorsport related.

Side-bar events to the weekend:
On Fri night in the town of Elkhart Lake, a 'racecar' concours is held at 6pm. The race cars DRIVE from the track to downtown elkhart! THIS is a must-see for anyone who's onto cars the least bit. Ever have a GT40 MKII drive by you before? This is your bone-chilling shot to experience it

Saturday night in the town of Elkhart Lake is the 'sportscar' concours. sports cars are displayed and judged from about 6 till 8 or so.

Joe, like Mike and John said - this is THE event of the summer if you like competition cars even just a little bit. Mike hit the nail on the head with his choice of the word "spectacle".

Another thing that wasn't mentioned is that the ticket price includes access to the paddock area. So you can walk in and be right in the middle of the action, up close and personal with the racers and their cars. My favorites are the old Trans AM and Can Am cars... Being able to watch them run in anger on the track is incredible; being able to look at them up close in the paddock and talk with the drivers is some serious icing on the cake.

Were these same three that were at Bergstom's for a bit during the Fiat Dealership show? If so, great looking cars, it was awesome to hear all three drive away and compare the three different exhaust notes.

Just got home (Thursday 8:00 pm) and what a great day! So many awesome cars, and fabulous weather.

I plan on getting to the track at about 2 pm on Friday, then heading into Elkhart Lake about 4 pm for the parade.

We are heading up from Milwaukee around 3:30 this afternoon. Most everyone in the group heading up with me is experiencing this track / event for the 1st time, so they're all in for a treat! See everyone up there!

 

I saw this Singer parked outside my office this morning in all its glory. It really is an amzing looking machine in person. I can only assume it's here to go up to Road America this weekend.

Nice collection of machines tearing around the track today. Lots of American iron and decent number of choice european exotica.
Sat in the new McLaren MP4C and drooled over the rolling chassis they brought along. Nice car, didn't give me a woody like the Can-Am McLaren did though.
