MB have realized that they have reached a dead end with their current strategy and are beefing up the team by trying to hire 100 additional technicians, engineers and mechanics.

Apparently they have 39 job ads out but allegedly some of these positions are scheduled to be double or triple filled.

Also Haugg has given up on improving this years car and is focusing on next years car.

Sounds like last years season all over again.

Is this a serious post? If so, about time, better late than never, w/e..

These mfrs just can't get it right, they either spend way too much, or too little like these guys. Gotta feel bad for Ross getting stuck under MB.

Let's hold off for now. Let me know if you want to go double or nothing for 2012

    Serious post.

MB were proud to have over 100 less people than the big three. Finally they realized that shoe string budgets won't take you out of midfield.

Does not matter how many 10000s of engineers they hire. They first need to start with 2 strong drivers. Both of them seem to be out for a Sunday afternoon drive at the moment.

Mercedes engine works is a completely separate unit from the "Mercedes" Brawn F1 team. If they are to get more out of the car and engine combination the two need to be further integrated and they need to throw Mclaren under the bus.

I (personally) wouldn't move a recognised brand that sells Merc. cars and wins championships out of a position to win to try with a 100% branded name.

I would be interested to know what impact difference there was between a Benetton Renault, or a Williams Renault constructors or drivers championship at the dealer throughput comparend with a Renault/Renault championship.

I would love to see Ross competitive - but maybe the most realistic situation is a toungue-in-cheek joke. Perhaps they should ask Honda if they would be willing to chip in for another Merc. world championship title.

Not sure the integration of engine and chassis is what's missing. McLaren and Farce India don't have that advantage either, yet managed to beat MB at Nuerburgring.

Hamilton winning shows how good the Mercedes engine is. So the fault lies with the chassis. I also wouldn't blame the drivers. Rosberg in a Red Bull would be winning. Maybe even Schumacher. :p

I read about this yesterday morning but didn't want to start a thread on it, even though it is big news (and I'm the biggest MB fanboy around!).

Anyway, yes they finally found out that 450 staff teams cannot compete with 550 staff teams. Their drivers are not the issue, but rather it was their paradigm of how they did business which thankfully they area leaving.

Here's the thing, even if MB had their 100 extra people staffed tomorrow it's still going to take a bit of time to have synergy with the inner-workings of the team to produce winning results. I have no doubt they will get there, but it will take a couple seasons.

W03 is most likely knee deep in development and Bob Bell probably has his hands all over things which is good. In essence this means the new staffers will come in and do Bob's bidding which is a good thing because I am sure he already knows what he wants which means less discussion and more doing.

MB is taking this seriously and they have winning people running the show which makes them very different from Honda/Toyota/Jag etc. With Red Bull's chief aerodynamacist coming on board (rumored to be confirmed now) they have a winning team, they just need the time to build and win but they will surely get there.

Just to show everyone what an MB/Schu geek I am, read on regarding the MB agenda when they bought the team.

Mercedes wanted to join F1 with the RRA (resource restriction) in place. Staffing remained pretty much the same when MB took over. MB had to guarantee no funds would be directed to F1 that could have gone to employing more people back home which was a rough one to figure I imagine. Now Mercedes are looking at breaking their own sales and profit records, meaning there is money to invest.

Also in Australia this year, Schumacher actively sought to address the imbalance with a 3 min BBC cameo, on how it was beyond him how the top 3 continued to grow (and spend more) despite the RRA being mandated to do the opposite. So Mercedes are naive on 2 counts; buying Brawn then expecting others to slash their budgets, and workforce in line with pre-agreed RRA limitations (the latter not really Mercedes fault).

Now the cash has dropped and we are not seeing gains. Mercedes have to react to make this work. Increasing the budget is a natural thing to do, but hiring staff will only work if you hire the right staff, which they certainly have so far.

Is there anyone more qualified to know who's who, in F1 than Bob Bell and Ross Brawn? If I were Macca, Ferrari, or RB, I would be terrified of this news.

    Agreed.

    Agreed.

Agreed. Does that mean that MS is out of luck for his 8th title?

Car manufacturers are in F1 until sales go downhill. With a potential new recession hitting in 2012, who knows how long this will last?

Yup, they were very naive. Big companies like Ferrari, Renault and McLaren have endless ways of hiding their real numbers of staff. Just goes to show that MB is new to F1 or never read the great book "The Piranha Club".

    I wouldn't.

*IF* they ever get their act together, it won't happen for a while (as you pointed out yourself) and by then the MB board might want to go a different direction anyhow. Big car manufacturers are a fickle bunch.

And even if MB becomes a top team, well, bad for my bet with you, but good for F1. No problem. But it would be a first (well second actually after Renault's success).

I would imagine, at some stage Mclaren will be building there own engines, selling road cars with its own engines and racing others with a power unit supplied by a rival car, doesn't sit quite right IMO.

I'm in for the same bet for 2012. And 2013 and 2014... :)

Schumi will stick around IMO. Why leave just as the increased investment starts to pay off?

Agreed. Wasn't the plan to start their own engines as of 2016?

Brawn knows very good and well about F1 staffing numbers and who has what. Schu will stick around until he has a good car to really compete in. Won't happen until at least 2013 though. Macca, Ferrari, and RB should not be shaking in their boots just now, but they see MB is putting the whip to the issue and I don't think collectively they are about to short-sale Ross Brawn's F1 management know-how.

If the top 3 becomes the top 4, it would be absolutely fanstastic for the sport. The WDC and WCC would be much more interesting.

Mercedes engine works and development are very closely linked to Mclaren because of the ECU and past history. The MB Brawn team does not yet quite enjoy that close working relationship.

Force India is able to get good results by stable management that is not looking to win. All they want is points/ money for Mr. Mallaya (Kingfisher). MB brawn want to push for the podium and that causes problems when the engine and chassis are not in tune.

Mclaren need to find a good source steal designs for them first. :p

False. Matter of fact there are even accusations coming from the Mclaren camp that MB is giving their best engines to the MB factory works team. Such an accusation is of course rediculous when it comes to F1 engines as they are all within a few bhp from one another and each team is looking for different aspects of the motor and have different curves for their engines regardless. This is not an engine issue, this is an aero and chassis management issue.

Source? Not arguing, I just haven't heard anything like that.

A poster on F1technical lives in Brackley and has -I suppose you could call them kinfolk- who work there. MBHPE was supposedly instructed at a high level to provide the best units to the factory ream is the rumor which was started by Mclaren. It's totally false considering the exacting engineering standards which goes into these motors.

I wouldn't be surprised if McLaren begins building their own motors with the switchover the the turbo power in 2014.

Alright, so I'll cash in on 2011 once the points have been mathematically settled (lets wait till then).

And I'll be happy to steal further candy from you if you want to continue next year etc.

You do realize that with each passing year your hero is getting older? Well actually, so is mine, but he is still below the crucial 40 ceiling. :)
