Now that Austin is on the official FIA calendar, will the race really happen?

  1. Yes, it will happen.

  2. No, no way for construction to finish.

Yup. But for the record,... my position has always been:

    1. I'd love to see F1 in the US
    2. I don't believe that a new F1 facility can be developed, built, and run at a profit (under the guidelines new GP's are currently awarded)
    3. Austin has a lot to offer. Wouldn't have been my 1st choice for a USGP, but not a bad choice.
    4. That work is not progressing at a rate that will get the project completed by 6/2012.

You know what would be cool? If they carve out an area for camping and partying like Watkins Glen or Sebring of old.

I would agree with you 100% on all four points. That is why I am hoping the race gets moved to early November. Fifteen months for construction sounds more reasonable, As you know, Orlando and Miami were statistically the best locations in the USA for an F1 race.

The comment about the refueling layover being in Dallas just does not seem realistic. Dallas is so much further west than the final destination in Brazil. I would think planes coming from the Middle East would first stop in Europe, and probably direct to Brazil. Even Miami for refueling sounds more realistic.

On Point 2, which is why the $25MM from the State each year is very important.....Guess with that in the bag the finance people are releasing money now??? Oh, the 'independent non-profit organizing committe' met this weekend, and voted to formally submit the application to the State to release the funds to pay the Bernie fees :)

I recently heard a little more personal approach even than that from a local I was working with in Indianapolis. He was saying they essentially don't want it even if they could have it now. It's sort of a, "I hate F1" mantra going through their ranks not to mention the locals were never really into it either, which is odd considering all the outside $$$ it brought. So now they just have the brickyard and Indy 500 which are undoubtedly the intergalactic keggers on this planet to be reckoned with. If the shoe fits....

The first time I went to Indianapolis (not for a race) I had to ask three people before I could get directions to the track. The first two were only vaguely aware that there was a track there.

You must have talked to complete morons as the Indy track is probably the most historic race track in the US and Indy's number 1 attraction.

I'm not sure if it's the norm for all construction, or just my simpleton perception, but it seems as though here in Texas half or more of the construction schedule is earth moving and ground work. It always appears that the rest of the big construction projects complete quickly once above ground building starts. Hopefully that is the case here.

If it were broken down to percentages, does anyone have an educated guess as to what amount of time is spent on the "major" stages of building something like this?

Per their Facebook page COTA has started construction on the pit complex. That's certainly a step in the right direction.

You are correct, they are low or mid rise buildings for the most part, watch and see if the entire garage complex doesn't show up on a truck of precast panels...

And if Timing/Scoring tower is stell that erects fairly quicky as well....

I'll pull out the schedule when I have time....

Did Bernie receive his $25M yet from the kind citizens of Texas?

The local 'independent non-profit' organizing committee met last Saturday, and voted to formally submit the application to the comptroller's office. If I am not mistaken, Susan Comb's (comptroller) has already committed in writing to have paid it by the end of july.

Anyone else notice an uptick in outside press mentioning it now. First Top Gear, then an article in the New York Times....:D

Most recent photo from Tavo & Co. Their twitter said they were to upload some more today, but i guess they forgot.

You can see the track a lot better in this than the earlier photos. Guess they're starting to put more dirt back in after clearing most of it....? :)

You met the ONLY people in Indiana that had no ides where IMS was located. I lived in Dayton, Ohio, most everyone knew where IMS was located.

Oh wait, you asked for directions, this is the midwest, I am from the Midweat, we can not read minds, forget asking for direction, just smell the burning rubber.
