I won a free ticket once.......no luck. It doesn't take luck to have what you want. It takes hard work, patience, and keeping your eye on the prize.

My 1st wife won $25 the day the lottery started in Illinois; the ticket cost $0.25!

We were able to put a down payment on a new house with the windfall! ;)

Once, in my cockier years, I noticed a guy in 7-11 in line to buy smokes and
    a WA Lotto ticket.

"Gonna win the big one, eh?" I said
"Damn straight... gonna try - I got as much a chance as anyone", he replies
"So with smokes, it's like 1 in 10 that get a fatal disease eventually... you know that?"
"Yeah... so what's your point, kid?"

Yeah, it was a smartass smug moment... but the irony was just too fun to not say something.

No, I wouldn't be so cocky now. This was in the 80s.... I was a smartass then

well, I think the math is a little off. There are 300M people in the US. There are probably at least 1,000 winners that have won $1M or more in the past 30 years. So the odds is likely 300K to 1. Odds of winning powerball is 55M to 1 but there have been many many powerballs so the odds have decreased by that amt.
also, 88K members here tend to be wealthier than the average person (selection bias) so chances are, there's one lottery winner on this board who won big and probably at least 75% of us who won some tiny amount.

There's a guy who posts in the 308 section who won the car in a (radio?) competition - somewhere in Europe IIRC

Back of the envelope calculation using your figures...

There are 1000 winners out of 300,000,000, so the odds of any one person being a winner are 1/300,000. More importantly, the odds of any one person NOT being a winner are 299,999/300,000.

There are 88,000 members, so the odds of all 88,000 members not being a winner are (299,999/300,000)^88,000, or about 75%. (Ignoring the fact that we're sampling without replacement.)

We can conclude that there is roughly a 25% chance of at least one member here having won at least $1m in a lottery.

Perhaps a better statistical analysis would be: percentage of lottery winners that purchase a Ferrari. With the percentage of Ferrari owner's that are members on F-Chat....?

Some of them are also the biggest loudmouths when it comes to no tax increases in P&R when they didn't make 1 cent of their wealth.

Not long after Florida started their lottery, one of my friends hit 5 out of 6 numbers. Turned out a bunch of other people hit 5 out of 6 the same time and if I remember it correctly, he only got about $130.

I won $250K in a week-long scratch off thing that the Daily News held years ago. I was so excited, I couldn't control myself. The next day, the newspaper printed an apology saying they printed the wrong numbers; apparently a whole bunch of people had won because of the misprint. I was so deflated.

an even better statistical analysis would be to remove those of the 300,000,000 who are under 18 and shouldnt be included in the analysis

I've won $500 a few times on scratch tickets over the years.

Came home form the casino $1 - $2K ahead a few times also.

Best hit though was my 2000 Cobra R, which I won on a $50 raffle ticket back in 2001.

Car was at the time valued at $60k, and I had to come up with $21k in taxes

before I could claim it. Still have the car to this day.

My biggest win is about £ 80 from uk lottery,, but I know a woman a few miles away won £1million on a £5 scratchcard, but I have a friend who's girlfriend won a little over £3million to share with sister and her mother so they had £1million odd each. About 15 month later she won 5 and the bonus which was about £100000 pounds and she gave this ticket to her boyfriend to claim as she was embarrassed to win twice.
