Hello to everyone. I have just purchased my first Ferrari. Its a 1992 348TS in Nero. I sold one of my 911's to buy it because I've always lusted after one and appreciate the racing heritage and mystique of the marque. It has just had major service(timing belt, water pump, tensioners,ac compressor, clutch, brakes ,plug wires and tires).I plan on doing most of the maintenance myself and have a few questions to pose to everyone. What is the best place to buy and brand of oil filter to use and what weight and brand of engine oil does everyone run? If you run gutted convertors,do you have any troubles with the oxygen sensors throwing codes?I sincerely thank everyone in advance for their answers and hope to make some shows that are close to the Midwest region.

Welcome to Ferrari Chat, Jaybird! Your 348 looks great except....the front wheels are installed backwards. Sorry, someone had to point that out.

For oil filters, you're pretty much stuck with the Purflux brand as sold by the dealers, or by our friend Daniel at Ricambi America. The motor oil recommended in the owners handbook is Agip Sint 10W-40. I've always used Castrol 20-50. Lots of conversation on that subject here. Can we assume that you know how to check the level correctly? Do NOT (!!!) add oil if you check it with the engine cold and not running, it's a common rookie mistake and results in excess oil being sucked into the breather system.

Yes, gutted cats and "test pipes" seem to result in a flurry of error codes.

Congrats and welcome to the 348 Brotherhood! :D:D

Car looks very very nice. You are going to love it.:eek:

I would stick to using the genuine engine oil filter. They are available from one of the sponsors here Ricambi America. Get used to that name and remember it. They are the best Ferrari parts people to deal with bar none! :D:D

I use Mobil 1 fully synthetic engine in my 348. 15W/50. Find an oil that suits you and your climate.

Take car and enjoy mate. :)

Redline 5W40 motor oil does the trick, as will Redline 75W90 for the gearbox. Puriflux oil filters for your car, I don't believe there is an alternative. Don't gut the cats, it really doesn't add any "seat of the pants" HP, it makes the cockpit stink like fuel, you run the risk of causing ECU errors, and the cats are big bucks to replace should you need to.

Great looking car, enjoy in good health!

Congratulations Jaybird and welcome to the Brotherhood.

As others have mentioned, the oil is debatable among the members....factory spec is 10W40, but "different strokes for different folks".

As for the filter - stick with the Purflux, they are about $40 from Ricambi.

And like 3forty8 mentioned -Redline 75W90NS for the gear oil.

I use 0w40 and stock filter and run test pipes and don't have problems with any codes, but then again, I don't drive the thing! BTW, nice car.

Congrats! I'll second all those recommendations for Redline oils. I use 10w/40 for the engine and 75/90ns for the gearbox. Just FYI, if you had it serviced at a Ferrari dealer, they will have filled it with Shell Axial 10w/40. That Shell stuff foams brownish yellow in the reservoir tank. So if that's in there, don't panic when you check the oil level, it's normal... just change it out to something that wont foam like Redline.

I have a 92 TS as well and absloutley love it.. As for the comment above I have to disagree. I have test pipes (no cats) with a tubi style muffler and its runs sweet with no error message issues at all.. Now I can't say if the tuning has been modified of ECU code changed before I got it but absolutley no issues at all running straight pipes with a sports system..with O2 sensores in place...and boy can these cars sound good with Test pipes... The exhaust note is unique to the 348.. You just can't get the same amazing sound from any other model !!!

This is a great site with unlimited experience and IP available to cover just about anything you can think of doing with your 348... Good luck and enjoy as I am !!!

Andrew, my comment about error codes was directed at cars produced for the American market. I don't think a 348 produced for the Australian market has the same self-diagnostics system activated within it.

I didn't intend to suggest that a 348 with test pipes or Tubi exhaust would not run well, just that we have seen numerous instances of owners in the USA with their cars so equipped complaining that their cars have a tendency to trigger the warning lights.

On your car, when you turn the key to position 1 before starting, do the "slow down" and "check engine" lights come on?

Thanks for all of the replies.I put the front wheels on backwards just to see if anyone noticed and you have all passed the test.(Just kidding-I had no idea). I can see that this group of people will be a great asset for me maintenance wise and everyone seems to be really cool and helpfull.I think I'll drive it until it gets too cold around here and then order a filter from Ricambi and change oil over the winter. Thanks again.Jay.

Good looking 348. I had mine for 20 years. You will love the car.

Oil filters are Purflux.... that's it. I used Mobil 1 15/50 and never had any problems.

Where in SE Iowa are you. I went to school in Davenport.
