348 - hissing sound & gassy smell

    Drove the 348 for maybe 3 hours today after filling the tank up.

    The top was off and I kept getting wiffs of gas....thought it was the person in front of me but later confirmed it was me. Anyway, I decided to come home and see what was going on. After turning the car off, I kept hearing this high pitch hissing/whistling sound coming from engine bay behind driver seat. Probed around a little bit and then removed the gas cap and WOOOOSSSSHHHH ! There was a ton of pressure behind that cap and it took a minute for all those fumes to come out. I've always had a little bit of
    fumes come out but that doesn't seem right....

    Any thoughts are appreciated!

    Dave,

    It sounds like a fuel tank venting problem.

    There is a vent pipe connected to the filler pipe, just below the filler neck itself. I'd start by checking that it isn't blocked.

    If your fuel level is low, then I'd take it for a steady drive around the block with the fuel filler cap removed. You shouldn't be able to hear the hissing noise, thus proving that it is a vent issue.

    Problem has not returned....I may have overfilled the gas tank....?

    Lots of people have the same problem when they eat fried onions.
