Well maybe a restoration workshop is different, or maybe Australia has different rules than NZ?.

Car repair workshops in NZ definitely have those signs up ... or used to. Haven't been in one in NZ for 20 years!

Surely you know just having a sign doesn't absolve anyone of their legal responsibilities, right?

Found a forum from one of our customers
    http://www.performanceforums.com/forums/archive/index.php/t-67243783.html

BTW A Sign on a workshop does not absolve liability. We have:-
    Insurance for our workshop
    Cars in custody Insurance
    Driving Risk Insurance
    Trade plate

These days we never driver customer's cars.

We only drive car manufacturer's test mules for testing of our components.

Speaking about F40 traction, I remember as a kid an article in the Herald Sun about an F40 that was crashed and abandoned at a Melbourne intersection. Would be very early 1990's

There was a pic of the car on a tilt tray. Didn't look like a big accident but nontheless is was damaged.

They asked L Fox if it was his and he said no.

    Whose was it?

I have the article in a scrap book somewhere in storage.

If my memory serves me correctly.

A mechanic also wrote off Australia's only Jaguar XJ220 (at the time), in Sydney's harbor tunnel.

Bounced it off the wall 12 times or so.

The signs purpose to ensure the customers knew ... that's all.

    Anyway maybe things have changed?

Well if you were Lindsay Fox, you're son had just crashed your F40 in Toorak Rd, and some journo was asking you if it was your car that crashed ..................... what would you say?

That isn't the only car that suffered similarly.

a road test by the authorized examiner has always been a requirement of the RTA for a rego inspection in NSW.That's the law. although I know it isn't done by some examiners. Sorry only at an Inspection Station not at an RTA station

20 years ago Ken I took my 7 series BM to Rosebery RTA inspection station and all they did was walk around it, tested all the lights, checked the design rules on the stamp ... no drive of it at all

Hey, you must be talking about me and my 365 Boxer with parts all over the world. (well almost). I guess my biggest problem was because I had other cars (and my fav BOXER is the 512....a much more refined car and a better looking car than the 365......but not as rare,
I didn't really have the mindset to worry about putting the 365 back together again.
Bought the 512 and loved it so "who cares about the 365"
bought the F40LM and loved it so "who cares about the 365
bought the F40 and loved it so "who cares about the 365.
But now I am looking at a slow PUT TOGETHER and hoping to make it a concourse car for the poofter polishes days in the future.
Maybe I can have it together and MINT for the Vic. Ferrari rally next year for the concourse.

Crazy stuff .When I had my servo thru the 70s we were supposed to road test cars trucks & motorbikes but you weren't asked if you had the necessary licences when you sat for the RTA exam. my mechanic never had a bike licence,so mostly I checked the bikes, not always.
If you were caught not road testing you usually had your examiner's licence suspended for 3 months

That is a completely different situation to taking in a car for a service.

agreed PP but what happens if ,like you ,a customer refuses to let the examiner drive the car.In country NSW it can be a long way to an RTA inspection station and after 3 years old ,I think it is, all cars have to go through this every year or they don't get registered.
Just wondering.I never experienced it fortunately.

I'm not going to refuse a vehicle tester a drive of the car. It's part of the job and regulations.

I'm talking about taking a car for a routine maintenance visit and a mechanic thinks it's his god given right to do with the car as he pleases. That's a no no as far as I'm concerned. There's no reason for a mechanic to drive a car after a fluid change....and even if he does need to drive the car for any reason, then to drive it recklessly, dangerously and/or in any way illegally is just NOT ON.

    I agree.
We used to road test after engine /transmission changes wheel alignments or to try and diagnose f--ing noises and in country towns if you did the wrong thing the customer usually knew about it before he came to pick the car up. Some cars we used to 'excercise'
but it was in the knowledge that the owner didn't mind,oh! and we paid for insurance to cover this but never had to claim in 14 years so I don't know if it was really covered or not.

Ken...it's really all about what's reasonable and what the customer expects.

Going for a hammer in a customer's car just because you can is just not on.
