I am wondering what goes wrong with these rads that cannot be repaired/recored at a local rad shop?

Apparently they're made of plastic and I guess that's hard to or not able to be repaired

If/when my next one blows*, I am going the custom route--getting rid of the idiotic plastic/metal glued seal.

(*) I have eaten three in 12 years.

So it is the tanks and not the cores that fail most? Where does one get the all metal ones?

Neither, its the stuff that bonds the plastic roof of the radiator to the metal of the core that fails.
