+1 Me as well. Still think Hamilton is the fastest driver of them all, he just needs to settle down to what he was like in 2008 & 2009 when he was under more control.

 

If Vettel is considered a great driver by the teams (not us), then he'll keep getting top drives in top cars. He should be able to easily break MS's record if he wants to....he's already got a huge head start.

 

So true. Also the opposite. He led two laps, well above his cars performance, and he ended up where he should have.

Regarding the team orders, MS was on the softer tire at the end of the race. So team strategy or team orders, either way, MS had a faster car at the end of the race and Nico had the slower. Strategy = team orders.

Jesus himself couldn't break MS records "easily". Part of being one of the greats is longevity, smart decision making, and health or fitness. Mario Lemieux amongst many others were said to be on pace to shatter Gretzky's records, but no one has come close, because the Great Ones only come around very, very, rarely. MS is still probably one of the fittest drivers on track at 42. I don't see Vettle, LH, etc. etc. coming even close to MS. They are good drivers, but not "The Great One"

Aha well it's all IMO, I will try to keep it short..

I could not understand for the life of me why Bernie had Mosley as his side kick as head of the FIA. But then it all made perfect sense to have a power mad cretin over ruling stewards and making so many grey areas and rules brought up out of thin air to bring teams and team owners back into line if they spoke out against him, the other side to this was, it could and did artifically tighten the WDC race in which Bernie will have loved, keeping viewing figures high to the last race.

I figure under Mosley the phrase Ferrari International Assistance came about and was for real, just due to fact Mosley hated Ron Dennis, I personally think he was insanely jealous of him and his success.

I don't want to bring up examples of gross bad judgements, but lets say Kimi and Hamilton in SPA was a real bad one, there were others that year that all added up to a very tight WDC race. ..Bernie happy, hard core fans like me not.

Now when MS was winning every race, alot were happy IMO alot were not, because if he lead into the first corner you might as well switch the TV off.

I think Bernie realized this and did want the WDC wrapped up by mid season consequently losing viewing figures and ratings, and probably got Mosley to do something about it.

It was not until Flavio and Luca started spouting off in the FIA v FOTA war of words did Mosley finally get the boot, take on Ferrari you take on the vatican..

Flav went down with his ship.. the rest is history, I did not want Todt to take over to be honest but up to now he has kept a low profile, and seems ok.

However I do feel somewhat that they have tried to clip RedBullys wings somewhat tweaking rules ect, so maybe it is still going on to a certain extent.

Now I know I risk alot of flak saying this stuff, especially from Aircon..

But thats a short version ..

 

Oh and think about BrawnGP car they actually started the season 2/3 races in when Brawns car was actually given the ok on the diffuser issue...

Why was that, was legal or not from the off...

Nobody will ever touch or break MS' records:

While Vettel is young enough to collect the titles in time, a normal person reaches a saturation level in life. That's why multiple WDCs call it a day after a few years. MS never was a normal person. As PSK once put it, MS is a freak of nature. Which is also why he still has the need to race at age 40+.

Not bashing him, just saying that he is unique in that hunger for racing.

 

Geez, you haven't even touched the big ones:

- what caused Senna to go off in Imola in 94 (no rigging here, but the cause remains a mistery)
- how Ratzenberger's car passed the FIA crash tests
- why Irvine suddenly "choked" in Suzuka in 99, a track he knows better than most
- what caused MS to go off in 99 at Silverstone (no rigging here, but the cause remains a mistery)
- how suddenly Hamilton "choked" in 2007

to name a few

IMHO F1 is a LOT more rigged than meets the eye. A LOT more.

 

I almost agree, but if Vettel has four in the next 2 years (after this years) then I could see him remaining focused as it would seem so close. But he probably will not have four in 2 years and it will still require the right choices in the future, which could prove very difficult, especially if he is tempted by an uncompetitive Ferrari drive. Not saying the Ferrari drive would be uncompetitive, just that if it is, he still may be tempted as everyone wants to drive for Ferrari. So you are probably right.

 

Maybe my choice of words was poor......when I said "easily"...that was dumb....I certainly don't mean it would be 'easy'....but AGE wise gives him an advantage over MS's achievement. Whether he'll continue for long enough and with the right team is a whole different discussion of course.

 

Absolutely. And I think at the current level of competitiveness we find in F1, it will be a lot lot lot harder for anyone to achieve a winning streak like Schumacher did last decade. Neither Vettel nor Hamilton nor Alonso will come close to winning 7 WDCs, one reason being that Vettel, Hamilton and Alonso all three are on the track!

 

SRTMike came up once with a great rule of thumb, which states that teams are on top for something like 2-3 years.

I'm pretty sure RB will still dominate next year, but in 2013 a change of leadership will happen and definitely the new engine formula in 2014 will sort the deck anew.

Vettel is great, but he is not the only one in the game. There is Alonso and Hamilton and probably some new super talent we don't even talk about. Schumacher's situation at Ferrari with the dream team, his super talent, not much competition and dominating Bridgestone tires was unique and won't happen again.

The next several seasons are dominated by Arie Luyendyk's great grandson, Arie the 4th, driving for the recently formed Twinkie Team ("but they are just a snack cake maker"). The teams eventually rebelled and tried to return things to how they were in the good old days. This proved difficult as there were no longer any fans. The organizers brought in the Cheever kids and some women to get things going again, which left the door open for young Arie the 4th to suck up a few more uncontested championships before the Twinkie team lost there designer to "little" Chippy Ganassi.
