I went to Watkins Glen over labor day weekend for the Ferrari Club of America track day there and saw an interesting F50.

I was told by the guy watching over the car that it was a preproduction F50 that has no vin, a 5 speed tranny even though the shifter gate is gated for 6, a bored out F1 block among other things.

I wanted to know if anyone else can confirm this. Does anything like I described exist? The car had the appearance of a regular F50.

Did you get the VIN? Did you take any pictures?

If it had no vin, would would Ferrari bother with all the 'street' stuff; ie mufflers, cats, side markers, etc. seems odd

Perhaps its one of the S/N 99999 F50s. There is no way that car is a true prototype, it has regular seat belts, side markers exhaust, standard bumpers etc. I've seen one of the F50 mules in person and it didn't look too much like a road going F50. It had a 6 speed gearbox as well.

The F50 engine generally is derived from the 3.5 litre F1 unit of the previous (1994) season.

By the looks of the front bumper, it appears to be an Euro-spec car. 5 speed?? Interesting.....

The rear bumper is US spec however. It has the US spec overriders and bumpers (visible in the engine bay).

Classic Coach told me it was a 5 speed.

Yes, it was classic coach who brought it over. They were the ones who were looking over the car and were ones who told me it was a 5speed. I was staying in the paddock a couple of spots over with my mate's Scud, which was also brought up by Classic Coach. They were replacing brakes on the scud with some 430 GT pads when I was looking for an extra helmet to wear so I asked them if they had one. They brought me into their trailer to let me borrow a helmet and it was there when they started talking about the 5speed F50 they brought over.

That would be very odd, as the F50 prototype I saw was a 6 speed. Why would someone to go all the trouble of modifying the car for street use if it was a true prototype?

5 speed, interesting. I look forward to hearing a confirmation for yes or no about that.
