I am planning on having all the fluids changed in my 1998 355 F1. My question is, what engine oil, coolant, brake fluid, gear oil, should I use? I live in New Jersey so I drive it in the spring, summer, and fall. I don't track the car because it is a spider, but I do drive it kinda hard. Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Seconded. Pretty good recommendations. You might consider BMW's coolant. I'd dilute it with distilled water but you can use it straight.

    I like Mitch's list, but I use 10W40 as opposed to the 5W40. :)

Would the gear oil above also be the recommended fluid for the 6 speeds?

+2 on this list. I use BMW coolant and Mobil 1 0w-40 though. But the Redline is probably superior.

I rather like the "Royal Purple" 5w-40.(bought it online) And I use Redline NS 75w-90 for the trans-axle. I also use the Royal Purple coolant additive. It adds some lubrication and reduces surface tension to keep the temps lower. Or so they claim. Have fun.

What are the torque specs for the filter, and the two drain plugs? TIA

I've been a mechanic for 30 years. Here's how you install an oil filter. Smear some oil on the gasket. Then spin that mother on. By Hand. And by hand give it a good manly snug.Your done. Now for the 2 plugs. Ricambi was nice and gave me 2 new ones with the seals (1 for the oil tank, 1 for the block drain). Just give em a good snug. These are not torque required items. Now get er done.

I'm fairly sure it's 25 nm off memory. It's very important to correctly TQ everything to spec, hand tight does not apply to these cars. Make sure to use new crush washers on drain plugs.

Give me a break. My car doesn't leak a molecule. Maybe my wrist is just naturally calibrated.(Thank you God) I'm a human torque wrench. But for the purist, torque that mother! So you can sleep at night. And when you're at a car show with a bunch of old school muscle car guys tell em you torqued your oil filter. They will be so very impressed. What's the torque on the tire valve caps? OMG

+1. I used to always use a rubber strap wrench on the oil filter, but finally bought the Hill Engineering socket and use a torque wrench to get it exactly right. I recall a post or two in the past from folks getting a big gusher and mess from not properly torquing the filter.
