Does anyone have any tips or pointers for me as far as getting the car prepped for judging? Its pretty clean already... but I'm sure there are things I'm missing...
Heres a few quickies.. No Armor all...I use fantastic, then WD40 on tires, clean and dry look. Take floor mats out b4 you leave home. Polish is so much better than Wax, then detail spray.. Todays judges, miss the missing parts, aint like it used to be...more of a beauty contest than a concours.. Last time I entered that show, I won a preservation platinum award Good Luck..
I signed up for this, but am going to a DFC event that is donating toys to a local hospital. Tough decision, but in the end the kids won.
Not true. As I am one of the judges for the FCA, we have different types of judging depending on the event. If there is a smaller gathering, we do a 1-2-3 type judging. When there are more cars, we will perform a full inspection of the car (minus starting and headlight check). Even when we are doing a simple check, we still look for original parts (this is the reason why we ask the owners to be present when their cars are being judged so that we may look inside the vehicle as well as the engine bay. During the Le Belle Macchine d'Italia and Reading events, we checked all parts for originality.
Am I going to have points deducted for having rims or newer steering wheel? I have a fair amount of custom parts on the car to update it.
I've judged at the Fall Festival numerous times. Emphasis is always on preservation and originality rather than cosmetics. Of course, there's a limit to how dirty a car is, or how badly the paint is damaged. Non-original parts like steering wheels, rims, shift knobs, valve stem caps, etc. will result in at least a 1/2 point deduction, or even 1 or 2 points.
While I understand the desire to keep the car original, I can't understand why an upgraded part would cause a point deduction... but then again, I'm not married to OEM like many owners are. To each their own I guess...
Basically, if it wasn't on the car when it left the factory, or changed from the original factory condition in some way, its judged as a deduction. This philosophy is pretty much consistent with FCA judging guidelines. Aftermarket parts and other bling can quickly add up and knock a potential platinum winner (95 points or better) to a silver or gold. Even audio components (like amplifiers) will earn a deduction.
I understand the idea behind it, and it makes sense to me.. But, for example, I swapped out my stock rims and steering wheel for a Carbon Fiber wheel and lighter, wider rims and tires. I guess while these are upgrades with real world applications, they do not fly with the FCA judges... Im gonna losing points for my rims, steering wheel, etc...
This should help: http://www.ferrariclubofamerica.org/resources/DocuWorks/file_display.cfm?id=68 I don't have quick access to one, but maybe someone here can provide the actual score sheet with point deductions...
I died a death of 1000 cuts at the FCA National Event in Toronto in 2008. 1/2pt off for all sorts of things: nicks on rims (1/2 * 4 right there), some corrosion in the engine bay, wrong fuel overflow tube, 308 airbox bushings instead of 512 (yep, there is a small difference), and missing plastic thingies that hold 3 injector lines apiece. On the full 1pt hits, 2 wire instead of 3 wire coil, no Dinoplex (they did not hear the famous whine), etc. 88 pts.
I have no dillusions about getting a high score... but I'm also pretty sure that outside of some very, very slight dash shrinkage.. all my point deductions will most likely come from upgrades I made to the car.. ie, rims, steering wheel, etc...
I got hit for having a textured roof spoiler on my 328 GTB at the 2010 Annual Meet. Supposedly the textured surface only came with GTS cars to match the finish on the removable top. I'm 100% sure that my car came with a textured top from the factory; its a very early 328 (November 1985 production) and it has other 308 "cross over" details, like the plastic trim on the side view mirrors. I've checked this out with other judges. Still took a platinum, but that deduction was a bit of a surprise...
The flyer says 9:00-1:00. Im sure that you can show up late unless you are being judged. I highly doubt that the people running the event would show you where to exit in the parking lot .
Will be going. (2004 Rossa scuderia 360 coupe) I will ask the judges to give me a copy of the judging material so I know what/if can be repaired or replaced. Looking forward to meeting you all and it looks like SPLENDID weather will make it a great time!!! Yours, Tom
Great event, great time with Jeff 348 and Petey P...managed to take home the Gold in my class. Image Unavailable, Please Login
Awesome event today. Will post the pictures soon. I have a bunch. Whats the best way to fuzz out the plates? I have many pics with license plates showing and I know that some owners frown upon having other people upload their car with the plate showing. If the consenses says that it doesn't matter I will upload them as is. Some of the best ones have them showing. I will start off with the side shots. The great thing is that almost all owners don't use the front plate!! So those pictures won't be a problem. Just want to mention that with the exception of one 599 GTO, there weren't any other 599s in attendence. 1 612 though.
I skipped the event and attended one run by another club where we visited Mountainside Childrens Hospital and brought them toys. I figured there would be other 599's in attendance so I wouldn't be missed. Guess I was wrong....
